Bundesliga Club SC Freiburg Gets Go-Ahead For New Stadium After Public Votes In Favor

Bundesliga side SC Freiburg has been given the go-ahead to build a new stadium after a local referendum saw a majority vote to pass the motion. The referendum saw 58.2% of local residents vote in favor of plans to construct a new stadium on the outskirts of the city. SC Freiburg President Fritz Keller: "I can promise you that SC are going to be good neighbors in their new surroundings." Freiburg presented plans for a new stadium in the Wolfswinkel district of the city. Freiburg's players reminded the city's residents to go out to vote by placing a "Yes" slogan on their shirts for Saturday's 4-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt (Bundesliga). The DPA reported opponents of the proposed new stadium "will not yet throw in the towel." Public initiative Pro Flugplatz (Pro Airfield) member Udo Harter said, "The public referendum is over but the stadium hasn't been built yet. We will see what the future holds." Asked if he will take legal action against he referendum's result, Harter said, "It is possible. However, this decision depends on further developments." Should "everything go accordingly, Freiburg will play in its new 35,000-seat arena by '19" (DPA, 2/2).
