Football Notes: South African FA Begins Campaign To Collect, Destroy Illegal Guns

The South African FA has "started a campaign to collect and destroy illegal guns" after national football team captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed in a robbery on Oct. 26. The association wants to "melt down the guns it collects and build a statue of the slain 27-year-old who was also goalkeeper and captain" of Soweto’s Orlando Pirates, "one of the country's two most popular teams." The SAFA is "asking the owners of illegal guns to hand them in" (BLOOMBERG, 11/5). ... Police in riot gear "were deployed at a university in Zurich as protesters tried to force their way into a room" where FIFA President Sepp Blatter was giving a lecture. Media reports said that "at least one smoke bomb was let off after between 60 and 100 students managed to enter the building on Tuesday night although they did not get into the room itself" (REUTERS, 11/5). ... League Championship side Millwall Manager Ian Holloway has called for TV replays "to be introduced to help referees after a bad-tempered clash at the New Den." Holloway "was the third person on the touchline to be sent to the stands by Darren Deadman, the referee, in the second of two flashpoints after the interval" (LONDON TIMES, 11/5). ... All 20 Premier League clubs "have banded together for the first time to support the Tickets for Troops campaign which provides free match day passes to members of the Armed Forces." Free tickets "have been offered to some soldiers to all of the November 8 and 9 top flight fixtures to mark Remembrance Weekend" (London DAILY MAIL, 11/5).
