League Notes: UCI President Says China Has Potential To Be World Player In Cycling

Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) President Brian Cookson said on Monday that emulating British cycling success on the Olympic stage "will not come cheap but China has the potential to be a major player in the sport if it commits the proper investment." Cookson: "China has a great potential in cycling sport. I know there's young potential talents in China who have to be given opportunities and we already see some of them coming out almost by accident. If you can have one by accident, you can have two, but if you have a structure, you will have many more" (REUTERS, 8/18). ... Amidst walkouts from former India cricketers Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath, a Special General Body meeting, called by the Karnataka State Cricket Association on Sunday, "passed a resolution to take up developmental works, including construction of four clubhouses," to the tune of Rs 108 crore ($18M). The KSCA "is planning sports complexes, residential rooms and clubhouse facilities" in Alur (Rs 33 crore) ($5.4M), Hubli, Shimoga and Belgaum (Rs 25 crore each) ($4M) in a phased manner (DECCAN HERALD, 8/17).
