Goodell Says Stadium Proposals Not Viable Ahead Of Possible L.A. Vote

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a memo to all 32 teams yesterday wrote that the current stadiums in Oakland, St. Louis and San Diego are "'unsatisfactory and inadequate,' and the proposed solutions are not viable to keep the Raiders, Rams and Chargers in their home markets." The intent of the 48-page report is to "establish facts about the home markets, as the league views them, heading into" this week's special owners meetings on L.A. relocation. Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones also "sent a one-page letter to Goodell saying that he supports the Chargers and Rams sharing the Inglewood stadium." A source said that the letter "didn't mention the Raiders" (L.A. TIMES, 1/10). Jones in his letter laid the "groundwork for a potential negotiated solution" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 1/10).

Meanwhile, a group of "boisterous" L.A. Rams fans yesterday gathered for a rally at the Coliseum, "heralding their NFL franchise's possibly imminent return to Southern California" (AP, 1/9). Rams Owner Stan Kroenke has "come to be viewed as a sort of Touchdown Jesus with Southern California Rams fans" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 1/10).

Analyst: Controversial Ending To Steelers-Bengals Bad Look For NFL

Last night's Steelers-Bengals playoff game ended in controversy when the Bengals took two personal fouls late in the game to set up the Steelers' game-winning field goal. Fans were seen throwing trash at Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger in the second half as he was being carted to the locker room, and NFL Network's Steve Mariucci said the game "did not represent the shield." Mariucci: "I hated to see that for the National Football League. ... This went from a classic to a classless game."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict, who was assessed a personal foul on the final drive, has "long (been) a thorn in the side of the league" ("NFL GameDay Morning, NFL Network, 1/10). ESPN's Adam Schefter said of a possible suspension for Burfict, "The real question is whether or not it will go beyond one game. Something tells me it will” (“NFL Insiders: Sunday Edition,” ESPN, 1/10). Bengals CB Adam Jones "took to Instagram to express his frustrations with a profane rant" after the game. Jones "ripped the officials," and the video was "online for about a half hour" before he deleted the post (N.Y. POST, 1/10). Jones deleted the post after Pro Football HOFer Deion Sanders "texted him to let him know his mistake" (DALLASNEWS.com, 1/10).

Organizers Adjust For Fans In Freezing Seahawks-Vikings Game

Today's Seahawks-Vikings game marks the third-coldest game in NFL history with temperatures hovering near zero at kickoff, and fans attending the contest were asked to "bring their tickets the old-fashioned way." Ticketmaster "sent out a notice to fans Saturday advising them to print their tickets at home in case their mobile device doesn't work in the cold temperatures outside TCF Bank Stadium" (ESPN.com, 1/10). The Vikings before the game doled out "free hand warmers at entry gates" while also offering "free Caribou coffee in the Fan Zone" to help fans fight the temperatures (STARTRIBUNE.com, 1/7).  NBC's Bob Costas said pregame, “By next season, the Vikings will be playing in a brand-new indoor stadium. Two years from now, they will play the Super Bowl there. None of which does us any good at all today!" ("Football Night in America, NBC, 1/10).

High Flight Costs May Be Impacting CFP Title Game Ticket Sales

The average secondary-market price for tickets to the CFP national championship "is the lowest in years and well below" the New Year's Eve CFP semifinals. Airfares from cities "across most of the South" to the greater Phoenix area have "skyrocketed since Clemson and Alabama made it into" tomorrow's game. The average resale ticket price for the title game "is $674.81, far below the $1,124.44 average per ticket for the inaugural national championship game last year" (AP, 1/9).

Hancock Says Date For CFP Semis Not Moving Despite Ratings Drop

CFP Exec Dir Bill Hancock on Friday reiterated that he does not "anticipate any changes" to playing the semifinal games on New Year's Eve following a decrease in TV ratings for this year's contests. He also "acknowledged hearing from people disappointed at the start times." Hancock said, "I absolutely understand every fan who was unable to see the games" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 1/9). Hancock: "One year does not a trend make" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/9).

Former Cardinals Scouting Dir Correa Pleads Guilty In Hacking Case

Former MLB Cardinals Scouting Dir Chris Correa plead "guilty Friday afternoon in U.S. District Court to five counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer and was released on $20,000 bail" following the hacking scandal involving the Astros. Correa admitted as part of his plea to using the accounts of three Astros employees to "view sensitive and confidential information," such as notes on trade discussions and proposed bonuses for draft picks. The U.S. Attorney's office estimated the information he accessed had a value of $1.7M. Correa also admitted "taking measures to conceal his identity." The charges "carry a sentence of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 1/9).

Dolphins Switching To LED Lighting System At Sun Life Stadium For '16

The Dolphins will "switch to an advanced" LED lighting system at Sun Life Stadium ahead of the '16 season. Installation of the lights, "provided by the Eaton power management company, will occur in the coming months." The system will "reduce energy usage" by as much as 75%. LED lighting "turns on instantly, eliminating the warm-up period traditional light-bulb based systems need." The Dolphins and Vikings, who are building a new stadium, are "using the next generation of Eaton’s LED technology" (MIAMI HERALD, 1/10).

N.Y. Times' Nocera Revisits Salary-Cap Plan To Pay College Athletes

The N.Y. TIMES' Joe Nocera offers a "practical approach" to paying college athletes with his own salary-cap idea, which he originally proposed four years ago in the N.Y. Times Magazine. Now, he writes it is "worth another look." The plan "would not break the bank, as one side fears, but it does not completely abandon free-market principles either." Nocera: "Is my plan perfect? Of course not. The most obvious problem is whether my scheme violates Title IX by carving out football and men’s basketball players for special treatment. My belief is that athletes in the revenue sports play a different role on campus than other athletes" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/9).

Weekend Hot Reads....
