Weekend Rap .... Latest News .... No Fantasy

Several Leagues Named As Defendants In Latest DFS Lawsuit

The legal chaos that "imperils the daily fantasy sports industry now officially threatens" leagues, media companies and financial institutions "that have become partners" with DraftKings and FanDuel. Two Florida-based DFS customers yesterday "e-filed a class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida against approximately 50 companies and individuals that have either invested in DFS companies or facilitated DFS gaming." The defendants named include several leagues -- the NBA, MLB Ventures, NHL Ventures and MLS -- as well as The Kraft Group, Legends Hospitality and MSG Sports & Entertainment. Several media companies -- Turner Sports, Time Warner, NBC Sports Comcast Ventures, 21st Century Fox and Fox Sports Interactive Media -- are also named in the suit (SI.com, 11/21).

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, speaking before Packers-Vikings today said that he "sees a distinction between season and daily leagues." Goodell said that he "wants consumer protections on fantasy leagues," and fantasy football "should be about fun not money" (TWITTER.com, 11/22). Meanwhile, Goodell, before touring the Vikings' new U.S. Bank Stadium said the venue "looks extraordinary" from the outside. Goodell: "The way [Vikings Owners the Wilfs] brought the community in and the facility itself is obviously going to be state of the art. I think it’s going to be great for the fans and great for this community" (TWINCITIES.com, 11/22).

WWE Event At Philips Arena Mentioned As Target Of ISIS Attack

WWE's Survivor Series at Philips Arena is "one of several possible targets" for attacks today "by Islamic State terrorists, an online post purportedly tied to the cyberactivist group Anonymous claimed" yesterday. FBI officials said that the agency "was aware of the 'alleged' threat and taking it 'seriously' -- but added that there was no 'specific or credible information of an attack at this time.'" Increased security measures "have been put in place," and bags "will not be permitted inside" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 11/22).

N.Y. Times' Nocera Criticizes MLB For Lack Of Fan Safety Measures

The N.Y. TIMES' Joe Nocera yesterday in his first column on the sports business beat examined fan safety at MLB games under the header, "Danger At The Ballpark, And In A Baseball Ticket's Fine Print." MLB "likes to say that it puts fan safety first." Nocera: "When baseball mandates netting down the foul lines, and a leaguewide policy that bans open umbrellas while a game is being played, I’ll believe it. Not until then" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/21).

Fenway Draws 38,686 Fans For Boston College-Notre Dame Football

A pro-Notre Dame crowd of 38,686 turned out for a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to watch the school's football team face Boston College at Fenway Park last night. There was "virtually no BC imprint in or around Fenway for this game." BC was "rendered invisible" in its own town. Notre Dame "made sure" BC had "no presence while playing so close to home." The Red Sox Team Store souvenir stand across Yawkey Way was "bathed in Notre Dame merchandise, offering not a scrap of BC garb" (BOSTON GLOBE, 11/22). Fenway Park was "so magnificently tricked out for football that you'd have thought these type of events have been going on for years" (BOSTON HERALD, 11/22).

NFL Cardinals Reach 100th Straight Sellout, Illustrating Team's Ascent

The NFL Cardinals tonight will "take the field before their 100th consecutive sellout crowd" when they take on the Bengals. The number is "rich with meaning, illustrating how one of the worst sports franchises in North America has become one of the NFL’s shining lights." The Cardinals are "making their second consecutive appearance on 'Sunday Night Football,' a rare feat in the NFL." The team is "becoming more than just a regional attraction," and "might be the new America’s Team." The Cardinals' fan base has "emerged among the fastest growing" in sports (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 11/22). Tonight's game "originally was scheduled for the afternoon but it was 'flexed' into NBC’s prime-time slot," replacing Chiefs-Chargers (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 11/22).

Gordon Finishing Stellar Career At Homestead-Miami Speedway

Jeff Gordon last night celebrated his "stellar" NASCAR career at the former Versace Mansion "with a 'Last Lap Party' befitting a living legend." Gordon's last championship was 14 years ago, and he "desperately wants to go out on top." Today's season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway is "sold out." It "won't be easy" for Gordon, as the "clear front-runner" is Kevin Harvick (MIAMI HERALD, 11/22). Hendrick Motorsports Owner Rick Hendrick said of Gordon's legacy, "All these guys, Tony Stewart, would never have got a shot if it weren't for Jeff Gordon ... He does 'Saturday Night Live' and '(Live with) Regis and Kelly.' He broadened the fan base even further. And all of a sudden here's people ... that never witnessed NASCAR" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 11/22). Gordon is "quintessential NASCAR." When his "final checkered flag falls, win or lose, he'll ride" into the South Florida sunset "covered in oil, champagne, Pepsi and DuPont auto finishes" (ESPN.com, 11/21).

NASCAR Chase Finale At Homestead Delayed By Rain

The start of today's finale of the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup -- the Ford EcoBoost 400 -- at Homestead-Miami Speedway, was delayed by rain. NASCAR Chair & CEO Brian France on Friday said that everything possible "will be done to ensure the race is finished" today (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 11/22).

Meanwhile, NBC's broadcast today will "provide coverage of the full field," and viewers who "want to focus on the four drivers vying for the Sprint Cup Series championship can tune in to NBCSN, which will have up to three camera angles trained on" Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex Jr. Those who "want to experience Gordon's entire final ride can view a live stream of his in-car camera on the NASCAR YouTube page." Fans in grandstand sections 206 through 254 will "join in a special sendoff message to Gordon during one of two prerace card stunts." The other card stunt will be "a tribute to the Championship 4 drivers" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/22).

Today's race marks the 20th anniversary of the track, and locals "can’t help but cast their minds back to how this racetrack came to be" and how it "helped quite literally to save a city from ruin" (MIAMI HERALD, 11/22).

Alvarez Defeats Cotto Before Sellout Crowd At Mandalay Bay

Boxer Canelo Alvarez last night "showed a champion's spirit in getting the best of a determined Miguel Cotto, winning a 12-round unanimous decision before a sellout crowd of 11,274" at the Mandalay Bay Events Center (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 11/22). Chants of "Mexico" and raucous applause "filled the arena as Alvarez stood victorious with the WBC championship belt strapped around his chest, and The Ring title resting over his shoulder." The 25-year-old Alvarez "confirmed his spot as boxing’s new ruler by outmuscling" Cotto. Alvarez is the "assumed successor to the pay-per-view crown recently left open by Floyd Mayweather’s retirement and Manny Pacquiao’s insistence of fighting only once more" (LASVEGASSUN.com, 11/21).

Georgia State Submits Bid To Redevelop Turner Field, Surrounding Area

Georgia State Univ. "submitted a bid for Turner Field and the surrounding land" to the Atlanta-Fulton County Recreation Authority on Friday (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 11/21). The AFCRA, which is "charged with selling" Turner Field, will "begin reviewing prospective buyers" this week. The bids will "be unsealed as early" as tomorrow. The authority "has not announced by when a decision will be made." GSU's bid was made in conjunction with Atlanta-based real-estate firm Carter. They announced their hopes in '14 to "redevelop Turner Field in a public and private mixed-use development" (AJC.com, 11/20).

Sources: Browns, Titans Potential Front-Office Fits For Manning

The Browns and Titans "have strong interest in adding" Broncos QB Peyton Manning to their front offices "should he opt to retire this offseason," according to sources. There are "likely to be others who would pursue Manning for a team president/football czar role," but sources continue to "point to Cleveland and Tennessee in particular as landing spots" for Manning. He is "very attractive" to Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam III, and "landing Manning would be seen as a coup for any owner" (CBSSPORTS.com, 11/22).

Winston's Attorney, FSU Protest Airing Of Film On Campus Rape

A law firm representing Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston and Florida State Univ. administrators are "protesting CNN's decision to air the film 'The Hunting Ground'" tonight. Attorney John Boudet in a letter to the network wrote, "We urge CNN to reconsider the reckless decision to proceed with the broadcast of this deeply flawed documentary in the face of overwhelming evidence that the film's producers consciously and intentionally failed to adhere to any accepted journalist standards." The film, which "earned positive reviews" at the Sundance Film Festival and screened at theaters throughout the country, "focuses on sexual violence on college campuses and is set to air" at 8:00pm ET (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/22).

Quick Hits....

“Two sources deeply involved now say it could actually be 2017 when the NFL does return to Los Angeles. When I ran that by a league source what I was told was 2016 has never been a certainty. ... What is clear is there needs to be some sort of breakthrough to make next year in Los Angeles happen” – NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, on when an NFL team may relocate to L.A. (“NFL GameDay Morning,” NFL Network, 11/22).

"We have to worry. The attacks to Paris were not to Paris but to the civilized world" – Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes, on being cautious regarding security for the '16 Games (AP, 11/22).

"It doesn't mean it doesn't weigh on you, whether it's articles or reports, whatever it may be. Hockey has been my little getaway from everything. That's kind of what the feeling has been for me" – Blackhawks RW Patrick Kane, on his mindset in the wake of a sexual assault investigation in which no charges were ultimately filed (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/22).

POST, 11/22).

The Cleveland PLAIN DEALER's Brent Larkin in an op-ed piece wrote one way for Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam III to "salvage yet another lost season would be to tell" the city it should spend the $26M still owed to the team for a new scoreboard at FirstEnergy Stadium "on people who actually need it." He should also "apologize for the Clowns' unconscionable invasion of Cleveland's most precious pot of money."
