Jerry Krause, Architect Of '90s-Era Bulls Dynasty, Dies At 77

Former Bulls GM Jerry Krause died yesterday at the age of 77 after "battling persistent health issues." Krause retired last spring as D-backs Special Assistant to the GM, capping a "five-decade-plus run as a sports executive." He "gained his greatest fame for engineering the crucial moves" to surround Michael Jordan with talent during the Bulls dynasty, helping transform the team into a "global brand." His status as a finalist for the Basketball HOF "will be revealed next month" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/22). See more in THE DAILY.

U.S. Earns Spot In WBC Final Before Raucous Dodger Stadium Crowd

The U.S. advanced to the World Baseball Classic final last night with a 2-1 win over Japan at Dodger Stadium, where a crowd of 33,462 was present on a "cool and rainy evening." The ballpark was less than "two-thirds full," but the "'U-S-A' chants were deafening as the Americans scored the winning run in the eighth and held on for victory in the ninth." U.S. players "have embraced the carnival atmosphere" in Miami, San Diego and L.A., and with it the "curious underdog status of the U.S. team." They will face Puerto Rico in tonight's final (L.A. TIMES, 3/22).

Nike Beats Q3 Profit Expectations, But Signs Of Market Shift Remain

Nike "blew away Wall Street profit projections" in Q3, though sales were "slightly below expectations," up 5.5% to $8.4B. This comes amid "predictions from some industry analysts" that Nike, reporting after markets closed yesterday, would "post its first profit decline in four years." Nike President, Chair & CEO Mark Parker "called it a 'solid' quarter." Adidas has "successfully grabbed some market momentum from Nike," and "coming up slightly short on revenue expectations could fuel speculation that the balance of power in the industry is continuing to shift" (OREGONLIVE.com, 3/21).

Alibaba Acquires Ticket Vendor Damai, Emulating Live Nation's Model

Alibaba Group has acquired online ticket vendor Damai.cn, with an "eye toward feeding China's growing appetite for concerts, movies and sporting events." Once integrated with Alibaba, Damai "aims to become China's version of Live Nation," marking a "change from its former goal of aggregating ticketing services to become the country's version of Ticketmaster." Upcoming Damai events include the F1 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai and the Bayern Munich-Real Madrid UEFA Champions League match in Spain (WSJ.com, 3/21).
