Manning, Elway, Davis Hoist Trophies In Broncos' Pregame Celebration

Former Broncos players Terrell Davis, John Elway and Peyton Manning, "each with one of the Broncos' three Lombardi Trophies in hand," trotted out prior to Panthers-Broncos last night as "more than 76,000 joined them in celebration" of the team's Super Bowl 50 victory at Sports Authority Field. It was a "final look back before the Broncos forged ahead" (DENVER POST, 9/9). Good vibrations "rocked the stadium" during the pregame ceremony (DENVER POST, 9/9).

Meanwhile, Broncos LB Brandon Marshall during the National Anthem last night "dropped to his right knee at the 30-yard line" in front of the Broncos' bench. Marshall and 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick "played together and pledged the same fraternity" at the Univ. of Nevada. Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said, "Brandon is a great kid. He’s a leader of this team. And I believe in my players" (DENVER POST, 9/9). NBC’s Al Michaels during the broadcast said how players treat the National Anthem “will be the story at every stadium this weekend” (“Panthers-Broncos,” NBC, 9/8).

Landon Donovan Comes Out Of Retirement, Could Draw Eyes To MLS

Landon Donovan is "returning to the Galaxy" after retiring in '14. The move was confirmed yesterday with the team "releasing a video of Donovan putting on a No. 26 jersey." Donovan today will "go through his first training session with the club" and "could be available for Sunday’s game against Orlando City SC at StubHub Center" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 9/9). Donovan's reappareance will give MLS a "compelling story line to follow" over the season's closing months "regardless of his impact" on the field (USA TODAY, 9/9).

The Galaxy have six regular-season games and the MLS playoffs remaining, with Donovan’s contract "expiring at season’s end." Terms of the deal were not released publicly, but a source said that Donovan’s contract was "worth the league’s maximum player charge of $457,500, prorated for the final third of the season." That means it will "pay him about $152,500" (L.A. TIMES, 9/9).

Allen Iverson Misses Televised Hall Of Fame Jacket Presentation

Basketball HOF-elect Allen Iverson "missed" yesterday's 2:00pm ET televised jacket presentation that "along with a subsequent news conference marked the official start of three days of festivities" during which he, Shaquille O'Neal, Sheryl Swoopes, Yao Ming and six others will be inducted. The ceremony ended at 3:00pm, and Iverson "hustled into the facility adjacent to I-91 30 minutes later" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 9/9). In Philadelphia, John Smallwood writes under the header, "Giving Iverson Benefit Of The Doubt." Smallwood: "I believe Allen Iverson had travel issues. I believe that's the only reason he missed Thursday's Hall of Fame event" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 9/9).

The Basketball HOF this year introduced new orange jackets by Haggar for inductees, replacing the black jackets it previously distributed (Haggar).

LeBron, Paul Served With Deposition Notices In Billy Hunter's NBPA Suit

Sources said that Cavaliers F LeBron James, G James Jones and Clippers G Chris Paul have been "served with notices of deposition" in former NBPA Exec Dir Billy Hunter's wrongful termination lawsuit against the union. In addition to the deposition notices served by Hunter's legal team, California Superior Court Judge Huey Cotton has "ordered the NBPA to turn over the documents regarding an investigation conducted by law firm Paul Weiss into Hunter's reign" as Exec Dir, a review that "preceded Hunter's ouster" (ESPN.com, 9/8).

Mets' Alderson Defends Tebow Signing, Denies Marketing Considerations

Alderson: "This decision was strictly driven by baseball. It is not driven by marketing considerations or anything [of the] sort.” Tebow's minor-league deal "includes a $100,000 signing bonus" (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 9/8).

The Tebow signing predictably got heavy media coverage from around the N.Y. metro area, as well as from outlets across the country. If this doesn’t work out, he might never lose his virginity” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 9/8). NBC’s Jimmy Fallon said, “We actually have a shot of Tebow in his Mets uniform.” The broadcast then showed a picture of the Mets mascot. ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said of the '16 NFL season beginning, “The Broncos will be without quarterback Peyton Manning this year. You know that Peyton retired at the end of last season so he could spend more time grocery shopping with Lionel Richie.” Fallon said of Broncos QB Trevor Siemian, “This guy almost quit football to work in real estate. He was going to become a real estate agent and then of course, he could have been the next Bachelor, that’s the next logical step but instead, he’s the starting quarterback for the Broncos" ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 9/9). NBC’s Jimmy Fallon said of the start of the NFL season, “With the Denver Broncos playing their first game since Peyton Manning retired, they had seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian take his place. And before kickoff Peyton put his arm around Trevor's shoulder, he looked into his eyes and he said, ‘You know, starting today, you can get two medium Papa John's pizzas for six bucks.’”  Meanwhile, NBC’s “The Tonight Show” featured the recurring segment “Tonight Show Superlatives.” Fallon said, “Normally, ‘The Tonight Show’ gives out these awards, but tonight we thought we'd do something different. This time, we got NFL stars from around the league to give out their own awards (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 9/9).”

Thunder G Russell Westbrook was a guest on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” promoting his upcoming signature clothing line with True Religion. Fallon said, “You do sweatshirts, you do jeans. ... This is the type of stuff you roll up in.” Fallon then showed pictures Westbrook in his clothing. Fallon then put on a pair of sunglasses and a bracelet made by Westbrook, who said, "The good thing about us is we have a lot of options.” Westbrook said of his new Jordan Brand shoe, “I have a lifestyle shoe, just because of fashion, I like to change the game up a little bit, and went with lifestyle.” Fallon then put on Westbrook’s new shoes and the two faced off in a random object football toss (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 9/9).
