U.S. Sen Blumenthal Demands Answers From NHL On Head Trauma

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is "demanding answers from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman about the league's effort to reduce head trauma." Blumenthal in a letter sent to Bettman yesterday wrote, "The NHL understands the prevalence and danger of concussions in the sport but has chosen not to take them seriously." Blumenthal "gave Bettman one month to supply answers to nine questions about head injuries." The NHL is "under pressure from a federal class-action lawsuit in which former players accuse the league of not adequately informing players of the neurological danger players face" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/24).

An NHL spokesperson declined to comment "on Blumenthal's letter or his allegations." Blumenthal is a member of the Senate subcommittee "with jurisdiction over sports" (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/24).

Alternative Chargers Stadium Proposal Would Forego Tax Hike

Former San Diego City Council member Carl DeMaio today will unveil a plan to pay for a $1.5B new Chargers stadium "without a tax increase or a convention center annex." DeMaio said that the proposal "involves fans and investors, investing in the stadium for $5,000 to $700,000 each." In contrast to the team's "convadium" ballot initiative, this alternative plan would feature "a 250-room hotel whose rooms would overlook the stadium field, and a 200,000-square-foot retail center" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/24).

The plan lists six goals generated by a total of 113 "coaches, student-athletes, faculty and staff members." It is the "first time the athletic department has revealed a long-range plan in such a public forum." One goal was for 90% or greater "renewal of season tickets for football and men's and women's basketball" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 6/24).
