Cavaliers Break Cleveland's Title Drought With Historic Comeback

The Cavaliers defeated the Warriors 93-89 in last night's Game 7 to end Cleveland's 52-year championship drought, "complete the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history" and cement Finals MVP LeBron James as "one of the greatest to ever play the game" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/20). James "turned in one of the most memorable performances in NBA Finals history, earning runaway MVP honors" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/20). Oracle Arena was an "electrifying setting, with the capacity crowd standing and roaring throughout the game" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/20). There is now "absolutely nothing left for James to prove" (AP, 6/20).

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS: "Dethroned"

Tabloid back pages throughout the country went heavy on the Cavaliers' championship this morning.

Following the game, Nike via Twitter released a new spot to "commemorate the Cavs winning their first championship" (CLEVELAND.com, 6/20).

RNC Preparations Could Affect Cavaliers' Parade Plans

The Cavaliers will host an NBA championship parade on Wednesday, but it is "unclear if Quicken Loans Arena will be the site for any of Wednesday's events because of preparations that are ongoing in advance of next month's Republican National Convention." The team is scheduled to arrive back in Cleveland at 11:30am ET today. More than 20,000 fans last night "gathered inside and outside Quicken Loans Arena to watch the game on the Jumbotron" (ESPN.com, 6/20). The team and city "will release more details on the celebration once it's all worked out" (CLEVELAND.com, 6/20).

A "huge crowd of fans lined up outside Dick's Sporting Goods" at Cleveland's South Park Mall after Game 7 to be "among the first to purchase official championship gear." By 11:00pm, the "line outside Dick's swelled all the way to the back of the parking lot" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 6/20).

Revelers in Cleveland last night "hopped atop a fire truck, a police car's hood and windshield was damaged and there were reports of broken glass at businesses near Quicken Loans Arena." But "two hours after the game, it would be hard to describe the mischief with that dreaded four-letter word: riot" (USATODAY.com, 6/20).

A "neon 'Champions' sign has been added" to the Cavaliers/LeBron James banner on the Sherwin Williams building in downtown Cleveland (CLEVELAND.com, 6/20).

Visa Debuts Flagship Olympic Commercial During NBA Finals Game 7

By Ben Fischer

Visa debuted its flagship Olympic commercial last night during Game 7 of the NBA Finals, an opportunity that took the longtime Games sponsor a bit by surprise when the Cavs won games 5 and 6. The ad strikes a more lighthearted and product-oriented tone than Visa’s commercials in the '12 London Games, depicting Visa’s role in routine, daily transactions as several Olympians embark on fictional trips to Rio. Actor Morgan Freeman returns to voice a new line emphasizing mobile and digital payments: "The only way to click, swipe, dip, and tap at the Rio 2016 Olympic games." Edwin Starr’s "25 Miles" is the soundtrack.

Along with creative agency BBDO, Visa created 14 alterations of the spot designed for 38 markets around the world. Swimmer Missy Franklin and decathlete Ashton Eaton feature prominently in the U.S. version. Visa had long planned to launch the campaign in late June, but had Game 7 specifically in mind from the start. "Even though I’m a Warriors fan I was rooting for Game 7," said Visa Chief Brand & Innovation Marketing Officer Chris Curtin, the morning after Game 6. He added the chance to air it then "was pretty cool, because we think it’s a super big stage with a lot of energy."

NHL Expected To Announce Vegas Team Ahead Of Wednesday's Awards

It is "one of the busiest weeks on the NHL calendar," and Las Vegas is "expected to be announced as the NHL's 31st franchise." The BOG meets Wednesday morning at Encore in Las Vegas and is "expected to approve expansion" for the '17-18 season. The league has scheduled a 1:00pm PT press conference at Encore. The NHL's annual award show will be held Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Hotel, also in Las Vegas. The Stanley Cup will be "on display" at noon today in the Hard Rock lobby and will "have limited viewing times" today and tomorrow (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 6/20).

Carrie Underwood, who sang the show's previous theme song, will sing the new song, titled "Oh, Sunday Night." It will debut "during the first game telecast on Sept. 11." It is based on Underwood's '14 "hit country duet 'Somethin' Bad' with Miranda Lambert, but with new lyrics and additional changes to fit the program."
