UConn Wins Women's Title Game For Record 11th Championship

UConn women's basketball last night won an unprecedented fourth consecutive NCAA championship and 11th overall with an 82-51 victory over Syracuse before a crowd of 14,514 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse that "included NBA Commissioner Adam Silver." UConn F Breanna Stewart "capped her career as the only player to be named most outstanding four times in the Final Four" (WASHINGTON POST, 4/6).

The HARTFORD COURANT dedicates almost its entire front page to the UConn team with the headline, "UNRIVALED." Inside the COURANT: "The greatest senior class in the history of the game, and their architect, Geno Auriemma, did something no one had ever done before, not Pat Summitt's Lady Vols or John Wooden's Bruins." The Syracuse POST-STANDARD front page goes with, "UNBEATABLE." NPR contributor Frank Deford: "It's Time To Celebrate The UConn Women's Basketball Team."

Nike Chair Phil Knight pens a congratulatory letter to Auriemma, saying the coach "reshaped the sport and the way the world looks at a female basketball player." Nike is selling a T-shirt to mark UConn's 11 titles, and members of the UConn team are receiving a "special version of the KD8 shoes in gray, white, navy and red, with a gold swoosh." The words "National Champs" are embroidered on the inner tongue, with "11" on the heel (ESPN.com, 4/5).
