USGA's Mike Davis Calls U.S. Open At Chambers Bay A "Success"

USGA Exec Dir Mike Davis said that the U.S. Open, which concluded yesterday, was an "overwhelming success and, down the road, people will remember only the drama of the final few holes – not the talk of the bumpy greens and lack of quality spectator viewing areas." Davis: "Let’s look at how the golf course performed, because at the end of it all that trumps everything." Despite complaints from fans and some players, Pierce County Exec Pat McCarthy said that the "feedback she received was overwhelmingly positive, and she hopes it helps set the stage for a return U.S. Open visit" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/22). Golfer Billy Horschel said it is "very disappointing to hold a championship-caliber tournament on greens like this," adding he "lost a little bit of respect for the USGA this week" (Mult., 6/21).

Using feedback from the tourney, Chambers Bay officials "will make changes as they undoubtedly attempt to bring the national championship back to the Pacific Northwest" (SEATTLEPI.com, 6/21). The "final memory of this golf tournament was pure, unadulterated, unscripted drama." The "final stretch of three holes was absolutely riveting" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/22).

Twitter reactions to Fox' coverage: Bleacher Report’s Dan Levy: “What's amazing with Fox, is that after Dustin's finish, they didn't have Greg Norman talk about what losing feels like. Silence.” Golf Digest’s Ron Sirak: “The only entity who had a worse experience at #USOpenChambersBay today that Dustin Johnson was FOX.” NFL.com’s Bryan Fischer: “I think I like Golf Joe Buck more than Football Joe Buck and definitely more than Baseball Joe Buck.” Awful Announcing: "Bottom line for Fox golf: talent is ok, some of the innovations are good, but there are so many minor errors it is nearly suffocating."

Jordan Spieth's Star On The Rise After Second Major Win This Year

Jordan Spieth won the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, and his play "salvaged this Open, making it one to remember for all the right reasons" (AP, 6/22). If you "haven't seen the future of golf, you need to get your glasses cleaned" (L.A. TIMES, 6/22). In terms of popularity, this win puts Spieth "closer to No. 1 Rory McIlroy." The "changing of the guard could take place at St. Andrews" in the upcoming British Open (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/22).

AT&T runs a full-page ad in USA Today congratulating Spieth on his second major championship of the year: "Two For Two." Spieth is splashed on the Under Armour homepage, with an action shot from yesterday and the headline, “Two Majors. Two Wins. And He’s Just Getting Started” (THE DAILY).

Developer's Plans For New Raiders Stadium Expected Today

Developer Floyd Kephart and his New City Development have until today to "disclose how they intend to finance" a $1B-plus new Raiders stadium in Oakland. The group "won’t name any of its potential investors," and Raiders Owner Mark Davis "has yet to sign on." New City is expected to deliver the "framework for a deal that would include selling a portion of land at the Coliseum complex to the Raiders at fair market value – but ask the city and county to finance" $100-140M in "infrastructure improvements" (SFCHRONICLE.com, 6/21).

Meanwhile, A's Owner Lew Wolff said there is "no good way to put two brand-new venues at the Coliseum site." Wolff: "If the Raiders are going to be there, then I don't know what will happen. We'll have to sit down with [MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred] and see what to do. ... I don't want this fellow (Kephart) telling the A's what to do. We have no desire to compete with the Raiders for PSLs and sponsors" (BAY AREA NEWS GROUP, 6/22).

USOC Updating Agents On Changes To Endorsement Guidelines

By Ben Fischer

The USOC’s marketing department is hosting a briefing today for agents on changes to Rule 40, the IOC rule against athletes endorsing non-official Olympic sponsors during the Games. Earlier this month, the USOC issued new guidelines that relax that ban, creating a waiver application process that would allow athletes to continue "generic, in-market" campaigns as long as they start running before March 27 and run continuously through the Rio Games in August '16. Agents will receive a detailed explanation of the waiver process and updates on other Olympic marketing efforts.

Baseball/Softball Bid Shortlisted For Inclusion In '20 Tokyo Games

'20 Tokyo Games organizers today "shortlisted" eight sports for inclusion in their Olympic program, including the "combined bid of baseball and softball." The eight, which also includes bowling, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, squash, surfing and wushu, were selected from a "list of 26 sports that had applied for inclusion." The IOC in August '16 "will make a final decision on which sports will be added" (AP, 6/21).

Citizens Group Putting Sacramento's Arena Deal With Kings On Trial

Two Sacramento residents and a community activist starting today will put the city's arena deal with the NBA Kings "on trial" in Sacramento Superior Court. Jim Cathcart, Julian Camacho and Isaac Gonzalez "say the deal is a fraud, and they’re asking for a court order invalidating the subsidy." They claim that Mayor Kevin Johnson and "people around him lied to the public about the true value" of the subsidy. City officials said the claims are "entirely false" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 6/21).

Charlotte City Council To Vote On Arena Renovations Contract

The Charlotte City Council today will vote on a "contract to spend nearly $900,000 on suite improvements to Time Warner Cable Arena" as part of a $30M renovation. The city is "contributing almost all of the money for the upgrades" at $27.5M, while the Hornets are paying for the suites, spending $1.8M over the next three years. The city "will handle the contract work for the arena, which it owns," and the Hornets are to "reimburse the city for the suite renovations" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 6/22).

The field is slated to include Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Ernie Els, Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley. Grube: "We're very happy with our field" (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/22).

I’m going to need a bigger putter.’ You’ll know weed is allowed when a golfer yells ‘fore’ and somebody else yells ‘twenty!’” Fallon later said, “Of course all eyes are on Tiger Woods, who is looking to finally get back to his winning ways. Let’s check in on how that’s going.” Fallon then showed a video of Woods losing his grip on his club as he swung, launching it through the air. Fallon said, “Even Charles Barkley was like, ‘That’s terrible’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 06/19).
