WWE's WrestleMania 31 Sets Attendance Record At Levi's Stadium

Last night's WrestleMania 31 set a Levi's Stadium attendance record at 76,976, topping the previous mark of 70,799. The event also grossed a record $12.6M. WWE's previous record gross for the event was $12.3M for WrestleMania 29 at MetLife Stadium in '13 (WWE). The show was the "consummation of 96 solid hours of muscle flexing, merch moving and mouthing off that began Thursday" with the WWE's Axxess fan fest at McEnry Convention Center in San Jose (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 3/30).

A front-page piece in the S.F. CHRONICLE notes the PPV was a "logistical dry run" for Super Bowl 50. It was a "chance to see how they could herd tens of thousands of newcomers through a major international event." Light-rail trains "from the Fremont BART station to the stadium were packed with an estimated 11,000 riders," 50% more than for the average 49ers game (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/30). Another S.F. story described the scene: "As impressive as any event could be without being remotely moving." WWE is a "big soulless machine, but you have to admire the machine's money-churning proficiency" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/30).

The show included a cameo appearance by UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, who "judo flipped" wrestler Triple-H out of the ring (L.A. TIMES, 3/30).

StubHub Sues Warriors, Ticketmaster Over Resale Restrictions

By Eric Fisher

StubHub yesterday filed a federal antitrust suit against Ticketmaster and the Warriors, alleging the pair illegally conspired to force season-ticket holders of the NBA team to only use a Ticketmaster-powered market for ticket resale and restrict consumer choice. The lawsuit claims listings of Warriors tickets on StubHub have fallen 80% in the last year, and that the market restrictions unchecked will be replicated elsewhere.

The complaint alleges the Warriors threaten to cancel season tickets and deny purchase opportunities for playoff tickets to fans using other secondary-ticket exchanges. StubHub seeks to permanently enjoin Ticketmaster and the Warriors from implementing such restrictions, as well as unspecified monetary damages and legal fees.

TNT's Craig Sager Again Battling Leukemia, Tweets Son

TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager's leukemia returned last week. His son, Craig Sager Jr., via Twitter said his father is battling his "newest set of obstacles." Sager Jr. wrote, "He is undergoing a treatment that will be much like this time last year, when he got rounds of chemo and prepared his body for bone marrow transplant." Matters were "complicated when Sager caught the flu and had to be hospitalized." Doctors had cleared Sager to return to work earlier this month (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 3/30).

Reports: Lerner Set To Sell Aston Villa To U.K.-Based Group

Randy Lerner reportedly is "finally set to sell" EPL club Aston Villa this summer, as he has been "in talks with a U.K.-based group for a number of months." It is believed that Lerner will make US$222M from the sale, which is "quite the profit" on the US$94M he paid Doug Ellis in '05. The "one major stumbling block currently slowing down negotiations is Aston Villa's jeopardised Premier League status" (BIRMINGHAMMAIL.co.uk, 3/29).

NFL To Begin Studying Addition Of Fixed Cameras For Replay Use

NFL researchers today are "set to begin studying ways to add fixed cameras on all boundary lines for replay." This marks the start of R&D on the Patriots' proposal to place cameras on "goal lines, end lines and sidelines to ensure reliable angles for replay." The league "specifically wants to gather more information on the technology required to best incorporate the fixed cameras into the replay systems that makes it consistent in all 31 stadiums" (ESPN.com, 3/29).

Source: Magic Set To Renew GM Rob Hennigan's Contract Past '15-16

A source said that the Magic "soon will seek to extend" GM Rob Hennigan's contract beyond the '15-16 season. Owner Rich DeVos' family and CEO Alex Martins are "pleased with the job Hennigan has done" since he was hired in '12. The team originally signed Hennigan to a three-year deal "with a team option for a fourth year." Last May, the team exercised its option for the '15-16 season. Talks between the Magic and Hennigan or his agent "likely will occur after this season ends" April 15 (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 3/30).
