Candlestick Park Likely Hosting Final Event With Tonight's "MNF" Game

The 49ers will host the Falcons for tonight’s “MNF” game, which likely “marks the end of Candlestick Park’s 42-year tenure as the team’s home stadium.” With the 49ers moving to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara next year, Candlestick Park is “slated for demolition as early as next fall” (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/22). Tonight's game will be the 36th "MNF" game at Candlestick, "the most of any stadium in NFL history" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/23).

The S.F. CHRONICLE’s Ron Kroichick writes Candlestick “was a true Bay Area original, known as much for its rampant quirkiness as the stage for feats of athletic grandeur.” The SACRAMENTO BEE’s Matt Kawahara writes the venue “provided the backdrop to many iconic moments in this city’s storied sporting history.” ESPN provides some remembrances of “the historic but uncomfortable hunk of cement by the bay.” The SACRAMENTO BEE offers an Op-Ed under the header, “The ‘Stick Was A Tough Place To Watch A Game But Millions Did.”

Betfair Hollywood Park Hosts Its Final Race After 75 Years

A crowd of 13,283 turned out Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park for “the last live racing to be held at the landmark site that hosted 75 years of memorable competition.” The attendance was “the largest crowd since 25,837 attended Zenyatta’s last race in California” in ’10. Following a close final race, track announcer Vic Stauffer said, “A photo finish. Seventy-five years came down to a camera close-up. Seventy-five years at Hollywood Park. That’s a wrap.” The track then played “Happy Trails to You” over the PA (BLOODHORSE.com, 12/23).

Caroline Wozniacki Returning To Babolat In New Equipment Deal

Tennis player Caroline Wozniacki has signed a new deal with Babolat after "playing with a blacked-out racket for much of last season." Wozniacki, who played a Babolat racket before signing with Yonex in '11, played with a blacked-out racket starting in late spring, "which many presumed was a Babolat." Wozniacki will officially begin playing with Babolat at next week's Brisbane Int'l (TENNIS.com, 12/23).

S.F. Officials To Formally Make Offer To Host America's Cup Again

S.F. officials today plan to submit a letter to Team Oracle “formally offering to host the America’s Cup sailing competition again,” but the city this time will not be “offering any big subsidies or real estate as part of the deal.” S.F. Mayor Ed Lee has expressed a desire to have the event back. As winner of the competition, Oracle Chair Larry Ellison is “expected to pick the next America’s Cup site sometime in the next few months.” The competition will probably take place in ’17 (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/23).

Baylor Returning More Than 5,000 Unsold Tickets To Fiesta Bowl

Baylor’s athletic department confirmed that the school “will return more than 5,000 unsold tickets to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl committee, having failed to sell its 17,500-ticket allotment to the Jan. 1 game by the Friday deadline.” Baylor, “which had to pay for all 17,500 tickets upfront, has sold about 11,000 tickets and will keep others for last-minute buyers.” UCF “has sold only about 5,000 tickets to the game” (WACO TRIBUNE-HERALD, 12/22).
