NBA, Foot Locker Agree To Multiyear Marketing Partnership

By John Lombardo

The NBA today will announce that it has signed a multiyear deal with Foot Locker that elevates the company to a full league marketing partner. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Foot Locker will continue as the title partner of the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest held during All-Star Weekend. Foot Locker has sponsored the event since '04. The new deal also includes a new promotion called “Kicks of All-Star,” that includes a branded section on NBA.com that spotlights the different sneakers worn by NBA players throughout All-Star Weekend. The deal calls for Foot Locker to have a significant presence on NBA TV and NBA.com.

CBS Nixes Jameis Winston Interviews Due To Topic Restrictions

"CBS This Morning" Exec Producer Chris Licht on his Twitter feed wrote that Heisman Trophy-winning Florida State QB Jameis Winston would not appear on the morning show today because FSU "put restrictions on topics" that could be discussed during his appearance. Similarly, CBS' Jeff Glor tweeted that he was "scheduled to interview" Winston yesterday, but FSU "tried to put restrictions on interview topics at last minute." Glor: "We said no."

Winston did appear on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike In The Morning" today (THE DAILY).

National Finals Rodeo Moving From Las Vegas To Central Florida

Las Vegas "lost the prized National Finals Rodeo" yesterday when the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association board voted 6-3 to reject the city's offer to keep the NFR past '14. PRCA will "pursue a more lucrative offer" to move the event to Osceola County (Fla.), which will provide $16M in "annual purses and administrative costs." The NFR just completed its 29th year in Vegas. Las Vegas Events President Pat Christenson said that his organization is "working on its own championship rodeo" for December '15 (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 12/16).

Sports Illustrated Names Peyton Manning '13 Sportsman Of The Year

By Eric Fisher

Sports Illustrated last night named Broncos QB Peyton Manning its '13 Sportsman of the Year, marking the fourth NFL quarterback to receive the honor in the last decade. SI announced the selection of Manning last night during halftime of the Bengals-Steelers “Sunday Night Football” broadcast on NBC. Manning will be feted tonight at a ceremony in Denver. Recently retired Yankees P Mariano Rivera was among those seriously considered for the award, and Red Sox DH David Ortiz also was a finalist.

The decision prompted a few tongue-in-cheek responses on Twitter. CSN Bay Area’s Ray Ratto: “Once again, SI gets it wrong. That award belongs to Jeff Loria or nobody at all.” CSN New England's Tom Curran: "Had a feeling Peyton Manning's big playoff run last season would lock up SI's Sportsman of the Year." SB Nation and Deadspin contributor Robert Wheel: "Peyton Manning is an SI Sportsman of the Year, joining luminaries like Joe Paterno, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods and Pete Rose."

Churchill Downs Seeks Local Approval For Video Board Dimensions

Churchill Downs officials today will go before the Louisville Metro Board of Zoning Adjustment to get a "variance from local height rules" to build the facility's new video board. Zoning regulations "limit the height to 150 feet and Churchill is seeking a 20 foot variance" for the board, which will be up to 170 feet tall. Approval is "recommended, assuming Churchill provides some further information." The $12M, 15,224-square-foot video board is "scheduled for completion by Opening Night 2014 on April 26" (COURIER-JOURNAL.com, 12/14).

Adidas Takes Shot At Andy Murray's Critics Following BBC Award

Tennis player Andy Murray won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday, and adidas has “taken a shot” at Murray’s critics, “tweeting a picture of the sportsman with the caption, ‘Not bad for a man with no personality.’” adidas’ “tongue-in-cheek post” is part of the brand’s “new marketing campaign which focuses on responding to events in ‘realtime’” (London INDEPENDENT, 12/16).

Sources: NFL's Ray Anderson Eyes Team President Openings

Sources said that Ray Anderson's decision to step down as NFL Exec VP/Football Operations at season's end "had been in the works for quite some time," and Anderson has been "approached about team president positions by several teams in the past 18 months," including Raiders Owner Mark Davis. Anderson has "strong ties to the Bay Area," and sources said that he "remains on the Raiders radar ... with Davis still mulling possible restructurings." Anderson "could fill many of the roles that longtime exec Amy Trask did prior to her resignation in the spring" (CBSSPORTS.com, 12/15).
