Mets Trade RF Marlon Byrd Just Before Planned T-Shirt Promotion

The Mets last night planned to give out 500 Marlon Byrd T-shirts as part of a promotion, but the team traded the RF and C John Buck to the Pirates "for an infield prospect, a player to be named later and cash considerations" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/28). News of Byrd’s departure broke yesterday afternoon, "mere hours before the Mets were planning to distribute" the shirts (USATODAY.com, 8/27).

Fans who "purchased the shirt-ticket package were offered the original Byrd T-shirt, another T-shirt from a previous giveaway and two free tickets to a September game as compensation." It was a "generous offer, but probably small consolation" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/28).
