Detroit X Games Bid Organizers Outline Plans For "Assemble" Festival

Organizers of Detroit's unsuccessful X Games bid last night unveiled plans for an "alternative festival in the city's downtown with music and action sports competitions." The annual event, titled "Assemble," would begin in '14. A news release "did not mention the costs, sponsorships or precise location of the festival," but did say that additional details "will be released in coming weeks" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/22).

ESPN last month passed on the city's X Games bid in favor of Austin. But based on the "outpouring of support" for the bid, organizers Kevin Krease and Garret Koehler said that they "wanted to find a way to create their own sort of X Games." Speculation surfaced yesterday on social media about Tony Hawk's involvement in Assemble after he "posted several photos on Instagram from around the city" (DETROIT NEWS, 8/22).
