ESPN Radio's Jack Ramsay Likely Done Broadcasting Due To Illness

ESPN Radio NBA analyst and Basketball HOFer Jack Ramsay said that he "needs to begin immediate medical treatment and his broadcasting career is likely over." Ramsay, 88, "declined to discuss the nature of his medical condition." He was "diagnosed with prostate cancer" in '99 and "received treatment, several years ago, for melanomas 'all over my body.'” Ramsay on Thursday said that the "looming treatment will prevent him from working the remainder of the NBA playoffs." He had been "scheduled to announce" Game 3 of the Heat-Bulls series on Friday. ESPN "hasn't named a replacement, but Chris Mullin will fill in Friday" (MIAMIHERALD.com, 5/9).

Rutgers Set To Wrap Up AD Interviews; Decision Expected Next Week

Rutgers officials “will complete the first round of interviews Saturday” for the school’s vacant AD job when Wisconsin Deputy AD Sean Frazier meets with them. Sources say that the goal is to have an AD named “either Wednesday or Thursday.” By the time the “first phase” of the process ends Saturday, school officials “will have met with approximately 10 candidates for the job.” Other finalists reportedly include Louisville Exec Senior Associate AD and Senior Woman Administrator Julie Hermann, Stony Brook AD Jim Fiore and Florida State AD Randy Spetman (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 5/10).

Univ. Of Minnesota Expected To OK Vikes' Deal For TCF Bank Stadium

The Univ. of Minnesota’s governing board is "expected to sign off Friday on a deal announced Thursday" that requires the Vikings to "pay $300,000 per game, cover gameday costs and fund upgrades" to ready the TCF Bank Stadium for NFL play, "such as a heated field." The deal "was unanimously approved by a committee of the Board of Regents on Thursday." The regents also will vote "on a related resolution that would allow beer and wine to be sold throughout the stadium during Vikings games" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/10).

USA Today's Hiestand Pens Final Sports Media Column For Paper

USA Today sports media writer Michael Hiestand writes his final column today after 24 years with the publication. Hiestand: "The people in sports media aren't a bad bunch. ... Since 1989, I've had the opportunity to get to know lots of sports industry people who are funny, creative and idiosyncratic. And entertainingly odd." He continues, "This might seem hopelessly 20th century, but if websites just see their users as Ms. and Mr. Page View, and TV networks just see their viewers as feed lots of 18-49 year-olds, they'll end up in trouble" (USA TODAY, 5/10).

The Turkish Airlines Euroleague basketball final four begins today in London, and organizers "hope a three-day season finale staged in the O2 arena [is] … a bridgehead into a potentially lucrative, geographically strategic but as yet relatively indifferent market." The accident was "another setback" for the staging of the America's Cup in S.F., "which has sparked great excitement and anticipation but also controversy." Corporate sponsors "have been hard to find," while private fundraising efforts to defray up to $32M in city costs "have lagged" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/10). Final Jeopardy!

Last night’s edition of “Jeopardy” featured the category “Soccer, The Beautiful Game.”
For $200: “Soccer is also called this type of ‘football,’ hence the short form ‘soccer.’”

For $600: “The ten players other than the goalie are said to play here; in baseball, only three do.”
For $800: “Also called a one-two, this play can start with a pass or a throw-in; then the player breaks past the defender into open space for a quick return pass.”
For $1000: “The international soccer body known by these four letters has more members than the U.N.!”

Laugh Track....Dem Bums

NBC’s Jay Leno: “President Obama said in the last press conference that he wants to close Gitmo. Gitmo? How about closing Dodger Stadium? How many people are being tortured there night after night? The Dodgers lost again last night. What is that, seven in a row? Their payroll is $239 million and they're in last place. They're like NBC with baseball bats. … The Dodgers are so bad, the players are leaving in the fifth inning to beat traffic. That's how bad it is. They are so bad, Dodger Dogs are now wondering what's in the Dodgers. … I saw a Dodger player take a baseball from a kid and autograph it and the kid said, ‘You ruined my baseball!’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 5/9).

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel: “Americans will spend between $17 billion and $20 billion on Mother's Day. The average spending is about $169 per mom which is the reason NBA players need so much money” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 5/9).

CBS David Letterman: “The Senate is now taking a look at the immigration bill which will provide sweeping changes if in fact the bill is passed. Passed!? Passed!?” After laughing hysterically to the point of tears, Letterman said, “Tim Tebow has got a better chance of passing” (“Late Show,” CBS, 5/9).

Top Ten....Teach 'Em Up

Last night’s Top Ten list was “Top Ten Reasons I Decided To Become A Teacher.” CBS’ David Letterman said, “I want you to pay attention to this, this is something fairly important, if not the most important thing facing America today. … I myself was home-schooled.” The list was presented by ten “brand new” teachers from Teach For America (“Late Show,” CBS, 5/9).

10) “I hope to live up to the teachers who inspired me -- like Ms. What's-Her-Name.”
9) “It's no fun saying the Pledge of Allegiance every day by myself.”
8) “Honestly, I didn't pay much attention the first time through school.”
7) “Kids need to know the moon landing was faked.”
6) “If I could make a difference in just one student's life -- well, that wouldn't be a very good average.”
5) “The glamour.”
4) “You work long hours, but at least the pay is bad.”
3) “Hoping to teach in an all song-and-dance high school, like on ‘Glee.’”
2) “In the summer, I can watch all you losers go to the office.”
1) “I want to help kids talk good.”

Final Jeopardy....

“What is Africa?”

Correct responses to the “Soccer, The Beautiful Game” category:
For $200: “What is association football?”
For $400: “What is offside?”
For $600: “What is the outfield?”
For $800: “What is a give-and-go?”
For $1000: “What is FIFA?”
