Phillies Fans Fill Nationals Park To Set Venue's Attendance Record

Saturday's Phillies-Nationals game at Nationals Park drew a crowd of 44,685, setting a ballpark attendance record and marking the DC club's "first sellout this season." The crowd surpassed by 2,700 the previous record, set in June '09 for a game against the Red Sox. When the game ended, "the seats remained about 85 percent full, nearly all of them occupied by Phillies fans" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/21). Buses "poured the out-of-towners into the stadium area hours before first pitch." Before the final out of the 5-0 Phillies win, "nearly 90 percent of a still-full stadium stood and clapped" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 8/21).

A sellout crowd of 43,388 attended Sunday's Indians-Tigers game at Comerica Park. The sellout gives the three-game series a total attendance of 132,239, making it the largest crowd for a three-game series in the ballpark's 12-year history. The previous record of 131,463 was set during an '08 series against the White Sox (Tigers).

A crowd of 42,374 attended Saturday's Cardinals-Cubs game at Wrigley Field, "the largest crowd at Wrigley since 45,777 witnessed" the '78 season opening Pirates-Cubs game (CSNCHICAGO.com, 8/21).
