They Were All Yellow: Michigan Donning Jordan Brand Maize Unis For Opener Against Florida

Michigan and Florida will wear "alternative uniforms" for their season-opening game Saturday at AT&T Stadium that will "feature an all-maize look for the Wolverines," according to Tom VanHaaren of ESPN.com. The maize uniforms, provided by the Jordan Brand, are in "celebration of the university's bicentennial and in honor of the 150th anniversary of the school's colors." This will be the second time UM has "donned an all-maize uniform," first worn in 1928 against Navy. UF will be "wearing an all-blue version of Nike's color rush uniforms that have been used as NFL alternative jerseys in the past." UF also will wear all-blue uniforms, "gloves, cleats, socks and wristbands" (ESPN.com, 8/28). In Detroit, Nick Baumgardner writes UM will be "rather bright" in its maize uniforms. It is "unknown, as of now, if this will be a one-time situation" or something UM "brings back throughout the year." UM coach Jim Harbaugh had "input on the uniforms and he took input from players as well" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/29). Also in Detroit, Jeff Seidel writes, "Immediately, old timers, and by that I mean, anybody with a sense of tradition and a love for Michigan’s iconic uniforms, began to scream: 'I gotta puke. Who let [former AD] Dave Brandon back in the building?'" At the same time, a "bunch of young timers ... began to scream in excitement to no one in particular." They "don't actually talk in person anymore." It means Nike is doing "back flips right now, just waiting for all the orders to come rushing in for this alternative uniform" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/29).
