John Thompson III Eyes Broadcasting Opportunities After Signing With Montag Group

Former Georgetown men's basketball coach John Thompson III "isn’t making any long-term decisions just yet" about his coaching future, but "for now at least, he’s ready to find his voice" as a potential broadcaster, according to Dan Steinberg of the WASHINGTON POST. Thompson and longtime agent David Falk met recently with Montag Group Founder, President & CEO Sandy Montag, whose sports media clients include "people like John Madden and Jay Bilas, Steve Mariucci and Hubie Brown." Montag said Thompson was "extremely engaging, well-spoken, analytical," and he "has the ability to be a really good broadcaster.” After the meeting, The Montag Group "signed on to represent Thompson in broadcast work," as first reported by SportsBusiness Journal. Montag said that he "expects to talk to every national outlet that carries college or pro basketball." Thompson's father, John Thompson Jr., had his own radio show after his coaching career came to an end, and that "wound up running for 13 straight years." Now his son "already is hinting at a similar transformation." Thompson III said broadcasting will be a "chance for people to see and experience a different side" of him. He added, "As a coach, when you’re talking about the team to the media, you’re more guarded." But Steinberg notes Thompson still might not be "ready to pour out his feelings about his previous job" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/7). Montag said Thompson would be "really interested" in being either a game or studio analyst. Montag: "There are a lot of avenues available to him. ... In the next several months we will be talking to every network that has basketball, whether it be college or NBA" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/5 issue).
