Jay Cutler Wants To Pick John Lynch's Brain About Transition From The Field To Booth

Jay Cutler this fall will fill the void in Fox' No. 2 NFL broadcast booth left when John Lynch became 49ers GM, and the former Bears QB would like to "touch base with him ... and kind of pick his brain" about transitioning from an active player into announcing. Cutler appeared on Adam Schefter's ESPN podcast and said he would like to learn how to use his “knowledge as a player and really try to bring that to the viewers." Cutler: "That’s why a lot of these television stations are hiring players, because they do have a little bit different perspective and see things a little bit differently.” Schefter noted the trend of players retiring to become broadcasters seemed "more pronounced" this offseason with Cutler and Tony Romo making the move. However, Cutler said it was just a “perfect storm” for him with Lynch's move creating an opportunity. He noted there "aren’t a lot of openings year-to-year” on rights-carrying networks. Before signing with Fox, Cutler said moving to the booth “wasn’t something that I wanted to do or searched out or had a big dream of." Cutler: "I wanted to take a fall off and just let something come about. ... I didn’t really want to jump into anything right away." But he said he became interested in the possibility the "more I talked to the Fox guys ... and saw the benefits of the job of coming straight off the field into the booth." Cutler: "It felt natural and it was a situation that might not be there next year” ("Know Them From Adam," ESPN.com, 6/7).
