NFL Franchise Notes: Redskins Could Tap More Than One Exec To Fill Vacant GM Role

In DC, Nora Princiotti reported while the Redskins will "address the vacancy created" when GM Scot McCloughan was fired last month, they "won’t necessarily do it by hiring one person to replace him." Redskins President Bruce Allen said, "We’ll assess where we’re at as a team and whatever type of personnel needs we have." Allen also said that he "believes the Redskins front office currently employs several talents who 'in a few years are going to be a general manager, a director of player personnel'" (WASHINGTONTIMES.com, 4/2).

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED
: In Philadelphia, Marcus Hayes wrote based on Eagles Exec VP/Football Operations Howie Roseman's performance over the previous six years, as well as Owner Jeffrey Lurie's "short, 11-month 'accountability' leash" for former coach Chip Kelly, Roseman "should have been fired." Hayes: "When you admit you've made unwise 'Band-Aid' personnel moves in the past, as Roseman did, and then you make similar moves a few weeks later, you're being hypocritical." But Roseman "combined patience with innovation and luck," the result of which "is a roster markedly improved" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/4).

IMAGE IS EVERYTHING: In Buffalo, Jerry Sullivan noted the Bills last week hired Gerry Matalon, an image consultant who "will work with coach Sean McDermott." But Bills Owner Terry Pegula "can be awkward in public settings," so maybe that "should be Matalon's top priority." If not, "they're wasting their money" (BUFFALO NEWS, 4/4). Sullivan also writes with the Pegulas naming McDermott the "face and voice of the franchise," they "should have fired" Bills GM Doug Whaley (BUFFALONEWS.com, 3/31).

COMING OR GOING? In Jacksonville, Gene Frenette wrote when Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan bought the Jaguars five years ago, the perception was that the team was "considered an odds-on favorite to be the next NFL team to relocate." Frenette: "The Jaguars have done a remarkable job of financially stabilizing a losing franchise, but what happens in 10-15 years when circumstances might change?" Khan or his son, Jaguars Senior VP/Football Technology & Analytics Tony Khan, who "might well have a lot more power by then," could "start to get a wandering eye." However, "judging by Khan’s actions during his tenure, the answer is probably no" (JACKSONVILLE.com, 3/31).
