Bills Hire Talent Consultant To Improve Image; Pegulas Not Pushing For New Stadium

The Bills have "hired a talent consultant to work with their coaches and players" as the team tries to improve how it is "perceived by the public," according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. Gerry Matalon, a former talent coach for ESPN, is "advising coach Sean McDermott." Matalon's role "might also expand to include developing" GM Doug Whaley's public image. Matalon is "meeting with Bills leadership figures this week at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix." The move is "significant for the Bills after the organization came under public scrutiny late last season" (ESPN.com, 3/28).

BILL ME
: In Buffalo, Vic Carucci writes the Bills still occupy a "solid, but outdated stadium in a community and state that has already invested to try to make New Era Field a little nicer and isn't exactly excited about pouring more money into new digs." Bills Owners Terry and Kim Pegula "understand that, which is why they aren't pushing hard to get a new stadium built" (BUFFALO NEWS, 3/29). Terry Pegula said, "The state just got through with a rather expensive renovation of the stadium. I don't think it's our place to make demands and ask for things right now. We have a lease on our stadium until 2023 and we're looking forward to the football season and not talking about stadiums" (BUFFALO NEWS, 3/29). ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert wrote with the Raiders' relocation to Las Vegas, the NFL's "two-decade blitz of stadium development" has "largely ended." With the Raiders' future settled, there are "no more NFL stadium flashpoints on the near horizon and -- more importantly -- no obvious cities to be used as leverage against municipalities that refuse to provide public assistance." Perhaps the only team with a "looming issue" is the Bills, who "might soon push to replace 44-year-old New Era Stadium." However, the Bills are just three years removed from $130M in taxpayer-funded renovations (ESPN.com, 3/28).
