People & Personalities: John Buccigross Prefers To Stay With ESPN As Contract Expires July 1

SPORTING NEWS' Michael McCarthy reported ESPN's John Buccigross is "poised to become one of the highest-profile TV free agents this year" as his contract with the net expires July 1. But Buccigross would "prefer to stay" with ESPN. Buccigross "doesn't have an agent" and is "handling contract talks himself." In an email Buccigross noted he has "had discussions with NHL entities over the years and have contemplated whether or not to try it out. So far I haven’t, but I’ll continue to listen" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 3/28).

COACH SPEAK: In N.Y., Jonathan Lehman writes ESPN's Jonathan Coachman "set off this week’s installment of Bristol fireworks on Monday when he flatly blamed" colleague Jorge Sedano on Twitter for "'jacking' a segment from his show." Coachman and “SportsCenter” co-anchor Max Bretos "do a segment called 'One Word.'" On Sedano's "'Nacion ESPN,' it was called 'Una Palabra,' a direct translation." Sedano replied: "You invented one word? Your pettiness translates in any language." Coachman responded: "From the guy who has had 6 partners ON the air ... oh you were talking about softball. My bad" (N.Y. POST, 3/29).

BRING IT ON BACK: Former MLBer Javier Lopez will join NBC Sports California as a studio analyst this season, "adding to a schedule that also will include a fair amount of time in the booth" for Giants games with broadcaster Duane Kuiper (CSNBAYAREA.com, 3/28). Former MLBer Cody Ross also "will work with NBC Sports Bay Area as an analyst on Giants pre- and post-game shows." Ross said, "I’ve always had some interest in doing that. ... TV is probably the next best thing besides being on the field" (CSNBAYAREA.com, 3/28).

MOVING PARTS: ESPN’s Kaylee Hartung announced that she has worked her final event for ESPN. Hartung has not revealed her next destination, but it was reported earlier this month that she will be joining CNN (THE DAILY)....CSN Philadelphia's Jillian Mele is "leaving the network" to join Fox News' morning news team. Mele was one of four co-hosts displaced at CSN Philadelphia after the cancellation of morning sports talk show "Breakfast on Broad" last month (PHILLY.com, 3/29).
