Adidas Unveils New Univ. Of Miami Uniforms, Paying Homage To Early Championship Teams

adidas and Miami yesterday unveiled new football uniforms for the school's game against Florida State on Oct. 8, and the unis are "throwbacks to the Russell ones worn by the three UM national championship teams" in the late '80s and early '90s, according to Susan Miller Degnan of the MIAMI HERALD. The uniforms, dubbed by adidas as "Legend of the U," are "simple," featuring "orange jerseys with white pants for home games, and white jerseys with orange pants for away games." The road uniforms will debut on Oct. 20 against Virginia Tech. There will be "no identification of the team or its nickname on any of the jerseys -- and no wing-like designs on the shoulders." There are "three stripes over the shoulder pads." The helmets, however, "remain the same" (MIAMI HERALD, 9/20). ESPN.com's Andrea Adelson noted the cleats will "feature a sockliner" with UM's Sebastian the Ibis mascot and a fire extinguisher, which is a "nod to Miami's famous pregame entrance." Sebastian the Ibis is "featured on the inside of player gloves, while the backside includes a patch that also replicates the gloves used during the '80s" (ESPN.com, 9/19). Miami-based allCanes GM Harry Rothwell said that the retail store’s website "crashed briefly as Miami fans surged online to buy the new jerseys" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 9/20). The Sun-Sentinel's Shandel Richardson tweeted, "Thanking the Miami Hurricanes for going back to traditional uniforms. Much better look than what college jerseys have become." 247Sports' Andrew Ivins: "Miami’s new uniforms look to be a hit where it matters the most: with recruits." ESPN's Adelson: "I will not miss those green Miami uniforms one bit. Buh-bye!" Palm Beach Post's Matt Porter: "Uniforms are fun. Friday's indoor practice facility announcement at Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach is a much bigger deal" (TWITTER.com, 9/19).

DIAL M FOR MISSISSIPPI STATE: In Jackson, Michael Bonner noted Mississippi State on Saturday will "debut new uniforms for its game at Gillette Stadium against UMass." The adidas uniforms "share the same template and helmet color of the Patriots," along with "maroon numbers on a white jersey." The block M logo with the state banner is "on each sleeve." The same logo "appears on a silver helmet." MSU will "wear maroon pants with two gray pinstripes" (CLARIONLEDGER.com, 9/19).
