Notes From 30 Rock: Bob Costas Taking Each Olympics Hosting Jobs As They Come

NBC's Bob Costas said that he is "treating each Olympics after Rio on a 'case-by-case basis.'" SI.com's Richard Deitsch noted Costas "does not have a number in mind regarding how many more Games he wants to be a part of, but his bosses started thinking about the post-Costas future after Sochi." NBC could "offer Costas an Olympic emeritus role, as ABC did" for the late Jim McKay. Costas said that he "would listen to any scenarios." However, he added, "There is a mutual understanding that ultimately the decision will be mine and we’ll see. I will respectfully listen to any suggestion" (SI.com, 5/8).

A WELCOMED TROT: In N.Y., Phil Mushnick writes NBC's coverage of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday "included a good balance that served both horse-racing devotees -- video and analysis of Derby prep races -- and serve-all, please-all features." As for on-the-fly coverage, NBC "nailed, in both video and interviews, the pre-Derby Turf Classic circumstances that left Grand Tito scratched" from the race. Still, while NBC "has improved -- it now more frequently scrolls Derby odds -- there’s no good reason they aren’t up at all times" (N.Y. POST, 5/9).

GOING TOP SHELF: THE MMQB's Peter King writes NBC hockey analyst Pierre McGuire is "so good, and so smart" at his job. During Penguins-Capitals on Saturday, after Penguins G Matt Murray made a save "in the five-hole" by a Capitals player, McGuire quickly commented, "I just saw the new Marty Brodeur. That is brilliant goaltending" (MMQB.SI.com, 5/9).
