Colorado Springs MiLB Club Headed To San Antonio For '19, Pending New Ballpark

Dave Elmore, who already owns a Double-A club in San Antonio, announced that he plans to move his Triple-A PCL Colorado Springs Sky Sox to the Alamo City for the '19 season, but the move "is contingent upon a new downtown baseball stadium," according to Josh Baugh of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. Elmore's Double-A Texas League San Antonio Missions "will continue to play at Wolff Stadium through" the '18 season. Elmore "acknowledged that there are no other cities on his radar for a potential move." Baugh noted San Antonio local voters "will likely be asked to approve funding to build the stadium, which sources say would cost about" $75M (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 4/7). Elmore said that he "has made it clear to officials" in Colorado Springs that "there are a number of issues, including poor weather conditions in the early season and an 8,500-seat stadium that is nearly 30 years old." In San Antonio, W. Scott Bailey noted local leaders are "advancing a plan to develop a downtown ballpark that would seat at least 10,000 fans." Elmore: "Colorado Springs is a nice community. But we've told them what the facts are. They're not happy. I don't expect them to be. But there's nothing we can do. We just had to be honest" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 4/7).
