White Sox Almost Finished With $7.3M Project To Replace All Three Outfield Videoboards

The White Sox this offseason have made "headway" on a $7.3M project to install three new videoboards at U.S. Cellular Field, according to Colleen Kane of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. New videoboards in right and left field, each "nearly 2,500 square feet, have been installed," while the center field board, at "slightly larger than 8,000 square feet and measuring 60 feet at its peak by 134 wide, should be up in mid-February." The current center field board "had become the smallest" in MLB. White Sox Senior VP/Sales & Marketing Brooks Boyer said, "I was just astonished we were able to get through the year using these boards ... because they had so many problems." He added, "It's a fun project to have. The deeper we get into it, the more we realize how much our fans are going to like this." Boyer said that the extra space will "enable the club to experiment with expanded content from sabermetrics to social media interactions to fantasy statistics." Boyer also noted that the White Sox have "added two new employees to the game operations team and have outsourced some work as they develop new content for the boards" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 1/28).

IN AN INSTANT: In Ft. Worth, Stefan Stevenson noted the Rangers are installing an LED lighting system that "will drastically increase illumination." Globe Life Park "will be the first" MLB stadium with Eaton's Ephesus lights, which "can be turned on and off instantly, a distinct advantage to the previous traditional bulb-based system." Globe Life Park "is the second major league park to switch" to an LED system, after Seattle’s Safeco Field "installed an LED system" for '15. Rangers Exec VP/Business Operations Rob Matwick said, "The quality of the light will be greatly improved. We’ve had some dark spots in the park over the years" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 1/28).
