A Great 40 Time: NFL Combine Staying In Indianapolis With New Five-Year Deal

The city of Indianapolis has agreed to a "multiyear deal intended to keep the lucrative NFL Scouting Combine" in town through '20, according to Anthony Schoettle of the INDIANAPOLIS BUSINESS JOURNAL. The deal "finalizes dates over the next five years and outlines how the event will use space in Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center" in '16 and '17. It includes "three one-year extension options" for '18-20. Visit Indy President & CEO Leonard Hoops said he "fully expects all of the extensions to be executed." Schoettle noted it is anticipated that the '18 option will be "finalized by May 1." Most contracts to hold the Combine in Indianapolis were "handled largely year-to-year, which made the prestigious event vulnerable to poachers." NFL sources said that at least "six other cities -- including Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville and Orlando -- have expressed interest in hosting the event." Rams Owner Stan Kroenke also had "staked a bid for the event in his plans" for the new stadium in Inglewood (IBJ.com, 1/23). Visit Indy VP/Marketing & Communications Chris Gahl: "With such a high profile event like the NFL Combine, we know other cities are vying for (the NFL's) attention and their business. Indy viciously competes for this event" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 1/24).
