Pro-Marijuana Group In Pittsburgh Stops Using Modified Penguins Logo At NHL's Request

The leader of the Pittsburgh chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws yesterday said that his organization has "stopped using a modified version" of the Penguins' logo at the request of the NHL, according to Bob Bauder of the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW. Pittsburgh NORML Exec Dir Patrick Nightingale said the organization received a "cease-and-desist" letter from the league. Bauder notes the logo "was similar" to that of the Penguins, but "showed an image of a skating penguin with a marijuana pipe in one hand and a lighter in the other." The organization "got a similar letter" from the NFL in October because it "used an altered version" of the Steelers' logo that included marijuana leaves (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 11/18). Nightingale said that the organization "chose a Penguins-themed logo because of the team's regional appeal." Bauder noted Pittsburgh NORML "featured a Steelers look-alike three-leaf logo -- similar to the Steelers' three-hypocycloid logo -- for six years until October" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 11/14).
