Steelers Extend Lease For UPMC Sports Complex, Rename it To Honor Dan Rooney

The Steelers and the Univ. of Pittsburgh Medical Center yesterday announced a "15-year extension to their lease at the South Side headquarters they share with the Pitt football program," according to Chris Adamski of the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW. The building will be "renamed the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex" in a move "intended to honor" Steelers Chair Dan Rooney. As part of the agreement, about $10M in improvements "will be made to the 15-year-old facility, including 5,000 extra square feet in a renovated weight/conditioning room, exterior and front lobby cosmetic upgrades, additional office space, training room and technological updates and an expansion of the locker room." Steelers President Art Rooney II said that when the facility opened in '00, it was "unique in the NFL." But Adamski noted now almost every team "has such a building" (TRIBLIVE.com, 11/17). Art Rooney said that work "will begin after the current football season and finish in time" for the start of the '16 season (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 11/18).
