Compensation Possibly Coming For Players' Tribune Contributors After Site's Early Success

Looking at "web hits, player response, millions of dollars in fundraising or actual critiques of the consumed content -- The Players’ Tribune can work in a win-win situation for everyone," and though to date no contributors "have received compensation for their work ... that's coming," according to Tom Hoffarth of the L.A. DAILY NEWS. More than 350 athletes "have contributed pieces" since the site's launch. A contributor "often sends out a feeler to the site with an outline of something" they want to address, and an editor then spends time with the athlete "talking off the record to find out motives as well as untapped story angles." The athlete, who can "write it alone or with the help of an editor, has final approval." Players' Tribune Editorial Dir Gary Hoenig said, "We're not at all trying to 'eliminate the middle man.' Editing is always a back-and-forth process. Some of the most intelligent language attached to some of the most famous bylines can be 20 percent written by good editors." Hoenig said that Founder Derek Jeter's role is "very hands-on." Hoenig added, "As for the idea that agents or PR people hover over this: I can't speak to who the athletes might show this to, but we've had to fend off worries of that and know what we are selling was candor and honesty and authenticity." Hoffarth wrote compelling content is "what's needed on a consistent basis." Jeter’s "leadership as an athlete of integrity who masterfully worked the media as a player gives the site invaluable credibility." Hoenig said that Lakers G Kobe Bryant's participation is "far more than an overseeing bit player," and that he is "deeply invested." Hoenig: "I consider it a victory when we've gone from snarky criticism to guarded acceptance to becoming a news source" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 10/4).
