Harris County Approves Plans For $2.9M Wi-Fi System At NRG Stadium

Directors of the Harris County (Texas) Sports and Convention Corp. yesterday agreed to "proceed with plans" for a $2.9M Wi-Fi system at county-owned NRG Stadium, with "installation projected for completion in November and December," according to David Barron of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. The agreement with California-based host provider 5 Bars "still must be ratified by the board at its August meeting." But Harris County Sports & Convention Corp. Chair Edgar Colon said that the final step "would not delay a timetable to have the system installed" before the end of the '15 NFL season. He added that "more than a million dollars" of the $2.9M system cost "will come from SMG, which manages the stadium and convention complex." Colon said that "no public funds will be required for the Wi-Fi system, which the NFL has cited as a vital addition to the stadium" in advance of Super Bowl LI in February '17. He said that neither the Texans nor the NFL "are contributing to the cost of the system for which the team and league will benefit" (CHRON.com, 7/22).
