Franchise Notes

In West Palm Beach, Brian Biggane writes NHL Panthers Alternate Governor Bill Torrey, who was the “first man hired” by former team Owner Wayne Huizenga, has “had to suffer a revolving door of owners, general managers, coaches and even players as the often-ignored Panthers have reached the playoffs only four times in 22 seasons.” Now Torrey “feels more fortunate with the deep-pocket ownership" of Owner Vinnie Viola, Vice Chair & Partner Doug Cifu and management of Exec VP & GM of Hockey Operations Dale Tallon. Torrey said, “We’re in the best position we’ve been [in] since Wayne. ... One thing about Vinny, he does what he says he’s going to do. Now we’re staying the course” (PALM BEACH POST, 6/25).

HEALTHY APPROACH: In St. Louis, Stu Durando reports the Rams have “joined the initiative to provide medical coverage at Public High League football games starting this fall.” The local program also “will include injury awareness training for all varsity football coaches in the PHL as well as a relationship” with St. Louis Univ. Rams Head Athletic Trainer Reggie Scott said that the team “raised money through community outreach initiatives and the NFL matched the amount” (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 6/25).
