MLSE Pushes Back Leiweke's Departure Date, Continues Search For Next CEO

Outgoing MLSE President & CEO Tim Leiweke's "on-again-off-again departure date has been formally pushed back," marking the "latest twist in a process that has dragged on since last August," according to James Bradshaw of the GLOBE & MAIL. MLSE on Friday said Leiweke "will continue in his role" on an interim basis as the company focuses on finding "a seasoned business executive" as his successor. Leiweke said, "I want to make sure this ends well, so I’m determined to do whatever I can to help. This doesn’t mean forever, or for years. I think it means months." Leiweke "first announced his intention to leave by June 30 of this year to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities" (GLOBE & MAIL, 5/30). In Toronto, Morgan Campbell noted published reports "suggested MLSE was set to hire" former Corus Entertainment President & CEO John Cassaday, but MLSE "has been secretive with details about the ongoing executive search." Running MLSE "doesn’t just require a high sports IQ," it also "demands a candidate with experience running a corporation." Finding one person "equally proficient in both areas is a challenge, though Friday’s announcement hinted MLSE’s board would seek a leader from the business world" (TORONTO STAR, 5/30).
