Marlins' Samson Adamant There Will Be No Fire Sale This Time Despite On-Field Struggles

The last time the Marlins "went on a spending spree and flopped --- just like they’re doing this season --- owner Jeffrey Loria pressed the 'reset button' and slashed payroll," but team President David Samson insists that is "not going to happen again," according to Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. Samson: "No. Absolutely not.” Jackson wrote, "Nor apparently is Loria so fed up that’s he ready to give up and sell, despite receiving occasional overtures." If the Marlins remain well below .500, there "should be roster changes and there assuredly will be." But what Loria "absolutely cannot do is drastically reduce payroll for the next two years as he did after the 2012 debacle." Not re-allocating money saved in trades "would be a punch to the gut of Marlins fans and their best players" (MIAMIHERALD.com, 5/30). Meanwhile, in Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde wrote now is the "chance to right a wrong by moving Dan Jennings back" to GM and "hire an actual manager." Because the Marlins have won two of their last three games, Loria "has a window of opportunity to scurry out of this mess with some morsel of credibility intact." It is "bad enough the Marlins have delivered a disappointing spring," but now they are "a clown act as well." Hyde: "Weren't the Marlins supposed to be beyond that by now?" Loria is an "intelligent man," but there is a "difference between being intelligent and being smart, and the manner these head-scratching moves are made is the latest exhibit on that" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 5/31).
