ATP/WTA Miami Open Adds Fan Experience With Fashion Show, Celebrity Chefs, Volleyball

Along with a new primary sponsor in Brazil-based bank Itau and a new tournament name, the ATP/WTA Miami Open has "added several new features for fans and dubbed it the Miami Open Experience," according to Michelle Kaufman of the MIAMI HERALD. The idea is to "create a beach party atmosphere at the Tennis Center of Crandon Park, with fashion shows, celebrity chef demonstrations and an exhibition professional beach volleyball tournament featuring some of that sport’s big names." Gold Medal-winner Kerri Walsh Jennings is "among the volleyball players scheduled to participate in the new entertainment platform, which will be held the second week of the March 23-April 5 event." IMG Head of Tennis Fernando Soler, who along with Miami Open Exec VP & Tournament Dir Adam Barrett manages the event, said, "The Miami Open Experience marks the first time we’ve presented the entertainment package to our fans on this scale." Kaufman noted celebrity chefs Tom Colicchio, Scott Conant, Josh Capon and Michelle Bernstein "will be featured," while fashion designer Tori Praver "will showcase her latest swimwear line" (MIAMI HERALD, 3/14).

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: Roger Federer said that there is "too much of a break between" the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open, leading to his decision not to play at Crandon Park next week. TENNIS.com's Kamakshi Tandon noted the back-to-back tourneys are both 10-day events for the men, "meaning there are four days between the Indian Wells final and the start of the first round at Miami, with the top players getting first-round byes." Federer: "The week in between Indian Wells and Miami is always a wasted week -- in my opinion -- for me. So I'd rather use that for some more time off, some more practice, maybe play another tournament." Federer also admitted that things "are unlikely to change" with the popularity of the two U.S. events. Federer: "They're very successful tournaments, they're very well run and organized. As you can see, the players love coming here, as long as it's working well, and it's successful and the fans enjoy it and the players do (too), nothing needs to be changed." Tandon noted Federer will play a lower-tier event in Istanbul in lieu of the Miami Open (TENNIS.com, 3/12).
