MLS Franchise Notes: Incoming Expansion Club Orlando City SC Unveils New Kits

In Orlando, Paul Tenorio notes expansion club Orlando City SC yesterday unveiled its new home kit, an "all-purple look that holds true to the team's traditions and includes the words 'This is Orlando' on the inner neckline." There is "gold trim on the neckline to accent the gold lion on the Orlando City logo, and white adidas stripes along the shoulders." Two-tone purple stripes run through the front panel of the shirts, "with a darker shade of purple along the side panels." A gold crown and the team’s name, Orlando City, are "3D heat transferred" onto the neckline. Orlando Health remains the jersey sponsor (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/6).

UNITED WE SPEND: In DC, Jonathan O'Connell reported a 406-page study commissioned by the DC Council indicates that at $286.7M, a new stadium for DC United on Buzzard Point "would be the most expensive" ever built in MLS. The study, which also shows the venue could bring $109.4M in economic benefits, "aims to assess a deal" proposed by Mayor Vincent Gray and City Administrator Allen Lew in which the city "would swap properties with developer Akridge and utility Pepco." The team "would then pay to build the stadium and receive a series of tax breaks" worth around $50M (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 11/5).

HAMMING IT UP: National Soccer HOFer Mia Hamm said that her involvement as an investor in expansion club LAFC "originated through her husband," Nomar Garciaparra. SI.com's Grant Wahl reported LAFC Principal Owners Henry Nguyen and Tom Penn contacted Garciaparra, who "grew up in Southern California, and over time Hamm entered the conversation." Meanwhile, Hamm said that she would "love for LAFC to join" the Timbers and Dynamo in owning an NWSL team. She said, "It’s been in discussion in terms of hopefully at some point. It just makes sense to me" (SI.com, 11/5).
