Serena Williams Debuts Clothing Line At N.Y. Fashion Week To Positive Reviews

Serena Williams’ Signature Statement Collection “debuted on day six of New York Fashion Week, and it was surprisingly good,” according to Marsh & Mirchandani of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The collection, which is already available on HSN, was “filled with wearable pieces like faux textured leather leggings and kicky little skirts, great moto jackets and vests, and shaped knit shirts we will all want to wear” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/10). Williams said that she “worked on every detail of the collection.” She said, “The modeling casting, the hair and makeup, the nails. You name it, I did it. I was focused on everything.” She said her collection, which features 27 looks, “used comfortable materials that you can wear every day but can also dress up” (NYTIMES.com, 9/9). In a special to USA TODAY, Nick McCarvel notes the "Serena Williams Signature Statement" show “certainly had a good guest list.” Among those in attendance were Vogue editor Anna Wintour, tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, actor Marlon Wayans, supermodel Coco Rocha and N.Y. Times Styles editor Stuart Emmrich. McCarvel writes, “Much of Williams' personality was on display on the runway. The look of the show was slick and sporty, with pieces often taking an animalistic tone in different colored-prints of leopard, a reminder of her dresses for the Open.” Williams' HSN TV appearances are “famous for their leggings, and those got plenty of play, as did leather visors and a heather grey sweater with a giant ‘S’ emblazoned across the front.” The Signature Statement collection “runs at prices that don't scream high-fashion prices.” Leggings “can be purchased for $14.95, sweaters for $49.90 and sateen blazers for less than $30” (USA TODAY, 9/10).

FIT TO BE TIED: In N.Y., Kirsten Fleming notes Heat F Chris Bosh's signature line of neckwear, called Mr. Nice Tie, debuted during Fashion Week on Monday night with a party attended by Lakers G Nick Young, Mavericks C Tyson Chandler’s wife Kimberly and Rachel Johnson, the “star stylist to A-list athletes” (N.Y. POST, 9/10).
