In Indianapolis, Jeff Swiatek notes Pacers Owner HERB SIMON has teamed with Emmis Communications Chair, President & CEO JEFF SMULYAN "to buy common stock" in Emmis. Smulyan, a former Mariners co-Owner, said that he and Simon are "buying the publicly traded stock because it's a good buy." Simon and Smulyan's company, HSJS LLC, reported in an SEC filing Friday that it has "authorized its purchaser Stifel Nicolaus & Co. to buy up to 1 million Emmis shares starting last Thursday." That apparently is "in addition to 585,980 shares HSJS purchased May 11 through Wednesday" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 5/22).

NAMES: New Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee AD ANDY GEIGER will receive $215,000 for his limited-term appointment, which expires on June 30, 2013 (JSONLINE.com, 5/21)....The Dolphins Foundation raised more than $600,000 during its annual "FinsWeekend" on May 17-19 throughout South Florida. The event featured current players, alumni and cheerleaders (Dolphins)....NBC's "AMERICA'S GOT TALENT" judge HOWIE MANDEL will serve as the honorary announcer for the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday (IMS)....Golfer CHEYENNE WOODS has signed with Excel Sports Management's MARK STEINBERG, who also reps her uncle, TIGER WOODS. Cheyenne Woods will seek sponsor exemptions throughout the summer and fall as she prepares to attend LPGA Q school later this year (Excel)....Runner's World Founder BOB ANDERSON is celebrating his 50th year in running by racing 50 times. Anderson will consider his goal met only if he completes the races "at a young runner's speed, averaging under seven minutes per mile." Last Sunday's Bay to Breakers in S.F. marked Race No. 22 (CONTRA COSTA TIMES, 5/21)....Blackhawks LW PATRICK SHARP earlier this month paid $2.95M for a six-bedroom, 7,300-square-foot home on Janssen Ave in Lakeview, Ill.
