In DC, Del Quentin Wilber reports “several courthouse security officers received baseballs signed” by former MLBer ROGER CLEMENS “not long after the judge overseeing Clemens’s perjury trial in the District’s federal court declared a mistrial in July.” The U.S. Marshals Service yesterday confirmed “an investigation into the matter, in which as many as six guards received balls.” There is “no indication that Clemens or his attorneys face penalties in connection with the signed balls” (WASHINGTON POST, 8/17).

ENGINE STALLED: In Baltimore, Justin Fenton reports Baltimore Grand Prix Founder STEVEN WEHNER has "filed a $750,000 claim against the current organizers" of the Izod IndyCar Series event, "joining another early investor who claims he has yet to be paid." Wehner said that Baltimore Racing Development LLC “failed to make payments totaling $575,000 owed to him over five years in exchange for his 10.2 percent stake in the company.” Wehner is also “seeking attorney's fees and interest” (Baltimore SUN, 8/17).

NAMES: MLB during the ’11 All-Star Game in Phoenix awarded the Foundation for Blind Children a $1M grant, which will “pay for a new technology that will help blind students keep up with their peers and become more independent” (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 8/17)….Pistons G RODNEY STUCKEY and F AUSTIN DAYE “dumped agents recently.” Stuckey fired STEVE BANKS and Daye “has moved on from” BDA Sports’ BILL DUFFY. Stuckey hired CAA’s LEON ROSE, who reps Heat F LEBRON JAMES and Hornets G CHRIS PAUL. There is “no word on Daye’s new agent” (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/17)....TIME magazine lists the Bleacher Report, Grantland, Jayski’s Silly Season Site, the Onion Sports Network and SB Nation on its 50 Best Websites of ’11 list (TIME.com, 8/16)….The non-profit Pros vs. G.I. Joes, which “uses video games to pit professional athletes against U.S. soldiers,” yesterday hosted an event at U.S. Cellular Field with White Sox C A.J. PIERZYNSKI and Ps MATT THORNTON and CHRIS SALE playing Activision's “Call of Duty: Black Ops” via satellite connection with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/17)….Former NBAer SCOTTIE PIPPEN has won a $2.37M judgment against Miami businessman CRAIG FROST and CF Air. Pippen in ’07 filed suit against Frost “regarding Pippen’s disastrous ownership of his own airplane through a company called Air Pip” (BIZJOURNALS.com, 7/16).
