LEAGUE NOTES

          The U.S. defeated an int'l team 21 1/2-10 1/2 in the
fourth edition of the Presidents Cup (PC) this past weekend
in Gainesville, VA, and in DC, Leonard Shapiro writes that
area golf fans, about 22,000 per day, "responded all week
with exemplary behavior." Tiger Woods, on the event: "This
is the way it should be. People rooting for both sides.
People weren't saying terrible comments to players." PGA
Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem: "What has stood out here this
week as much as anything is, number one, the evolvement of
the Presidents Cup and its maturation into an event of even
more significance" (WASH. POST, 10/23). In Chicago, John
Diamond wonders if "anyone cares" about the PC on a "level
remotely approaching" the Ryder Cup (CHI. TRIBUNE, 10/23).
In N.Y., Clifton Brown writes that the "debate will continue
about the best direction" for the PC (N.Y. TIMES, 10/23).
President Clinton and former President George Bush attended
parts of the PC over the weekend. Finchem: "To have
Presidents Clinton and Bush here says a lot about our game"
(WASH. POST, 10/22). In other news, Finchem announced that
the 2002 PC will be played in South Africa (W. POST, 10/23).
NOTES: In DC, Brian Straus notes that a crowd of 8,175
attended last night's Women's Soccer Challenge (WSC) at MCI
Center. Straus wrote that U.S. F Mia Hamm, who "customarily
shies from the spotlight," spoke to thousands of prospective
WUSA fans. Hamm, who will play for the DC franchise: "We
just want to thank all of you for coming out today and help
us celebrate the game of soccer. Based on the enthusiasm we
have out here today, I have no doubt that the Washington
team will have the highest attendance of all the WUSA." The
WSC will visit 12 cities over the next two months, including
seven of eight WUSA markets (WASHINGTON POST, 10/23)....In
N.Y., Gary Myers wrote that the NFL considers putting a
Super Bowl in N.Y. a "no-brainer" if a new stadium becomes
"reality." Myers makes a "prediction" that the city will
host its first Super Bowl by 2010 (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/22).
