NAMES IN THE NEWS

          Cowboys Owner JERRY JONES has filed plans to build an
     apartment and golf course community in McKinney, a suburb of
     Dallas.  The proposed 300-acre development, will be one of
     the biggest rental home communities in the Dallas area
     (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 10/20)....PGA Tour Senior VP MIKE
     BODNEY said that a "variety of problems" contributed to
     delays at the Presidents Cup, with some fans waiting as long
     as two hours to go from the course to parking lots.  Bodney:
     "I want to apologize to spectators and patrons of the event. 
     It's unacceptable to operate this way.  We've taken steps to
     remedy the situation" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/20)....The
     SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Daniel Kaplan reports that WTA CEO
     BART MCGUIRE earned $377,352 in '99, ATP Tour CEO MARK MILES
     earned $865,605 and USTA Exec Dir RICK FERMAN earned
     $642,542.  Kaplan notes that the ATP Tour had '99 revenue of
     $45M, compared with that of $14M for the WTA Tour and $150M
     for the USTA.  Additionally, '99 tax returns reveal that
     while the ATP Tour earned more than $4M last year, the WTA
     Tour lost more than $1M (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL 10/16
     issue). ...Knicks G ALLAN HOUSTON "regrets" the role he
     played in "Black and White," which featured some obscene
     language, violence and sex.  Houston: "I probably wouldn't
     do it if I had to do it over again.  I wouldn't have played
     that kind of a role. I wouldn't want my daughter to see that
     movie even though it's just a role" (N.Y. POST, 10/20)....SI
     reports that STEVE YOUNG "may consider running for a U.S.
     Senate seat from UT in 2004."  Also, S.F. Republicans are
     eyeing Young, feeling he would "have crossover appeal in the
     mostly" Democratic Bay area (SI, 10/23 issue). ...Red Sox SS
     NOMAR GARCIAPARRA appears on ABC's "TWO GUYS AND A GIRL"
     tonight at 8:00pm ET (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/20)....TX Gov. GEORGE
     W. BUSH offered his "Top Ten Changes I'll Make In The White
     House."  No. 10) To save taxpayer dollars, calls to winning
     sports teams will be collect ("Late Show," 10/19).
