NBC "suffered another blow" yesterday when traffic to
NBCOlympics.com reportedly fell 35% among home users in one
day, according to Daniel Sorid of REUTERS, who cited a
Nielsen//NetRatings report showing that traffic dropped on
the site from 5.4 million page views on Tuesday to 3.5
million on Wednesday. The dip by NBC's site pushed
Olympics.com "to the top of the charts of NetRatings' index
of Olympics related sites." Nielsen//Net Ratings said the
drop "was most likely driven in part by the rush for tickets
during Wednesday when more than 70,000 tickets were sold on
the Net" via Olympics.com (REUTERS, 9/21).
ON THE LOOKOUT: Copyright Control Services (CCS), which
monitors the Internet on the IOC's behalf from a 12-person
office in London, has "caught some 30 violators" for
unauthorized tranmission of Games footage. CCS President
Dave Powell: "There are very, very few examples of groups
broadcasting in direct flagrant abuse. I think a couple
broadcasters might be pushing the envelope. But everything
has been quickly settled" (AP, 9/22).
