NAMES IN THE NEWS

          In N.Y., Rush & Molloy report that MADONNA is in
     "serious negotiations" with MTV to perform at Super Bowl
     XXXV (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/13)....NBA Kings F CHRIS WEBBER
     donated $100,000 to the Police Athletic League (PAL) of his
     hometown Detroit (DETROIT NEWS, 9/13)....In DC, the
     "Reliable Source's" Lloyd Grove writes Capitals co-Owner
     JONATHAN LEDECKY upset with two female local TV
     personalities "who didn't see the humor in Ledecky's
     sexually suggestive quips" about them on WWDC-FM.  During
     the show, Ledecky was asked by the host if he had "closed
     the deal" with local news reporter Laura Evans, whom Ledecky
     has dated.  Ledecky said, "No, but it's probably clos-able. 
     When they start saying they'll cook you dinner, that's a
     good sign!"  Evans then phoned in to the radio show and told
     Ledecky to "have a little class, my friend."  Ledecky told
     the "Reliable Source": "I have apologized profusely to both
     people for any misunderstanding regarding a comedic
     appearance on a talk show, where my comments were the
     mildest things said" (WASHINGTON POST, 9/13)....CONNIE
     PAYTON, the widow of WALTER PAYTON, and Payton's son
     JARRETT, appeared on this morning's "GMA" to promote
     Payton's autobiography, "Never Die Easy."  ABC's CHARLIE
     GIBSON noted the book reveals Payton was "very depressed
     after his career ended.  He'd always wanted to own an NFL
     franchise but began to realize he never would."  Connie
     Payton: "That was a very, very disappointing part of his
     life. ... He was told to retire at the time he did because
     he would probably be a great candidate for an NFL franchise. 
     And he was very disappointed that he'd put a lot of time and
     hard work into that and to have it just blow up in his face
     for reasons he had no control over" (ABC, 9/13).

TNT’s Stan Van Gundy, ESPN’s Tim Reed, NBA Playoffs and NFL Draft
