GOLF NOTES: GOLF WORLD BUSINESS reported that Acushnet
has "filed a preliminary injunction against" Spalding "over
its use of the E-comfort name for a line of Etonic golf
shoes," as both companies introduced shoes in June "under
the E-comfort moniker." Acushnet's FootJoy filed for a
trademark in January, while Etonic didn't file until May.
The complaint, filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in
Boston, charges Spalding with "trademark infringement,
unfair competition, false advertising and injury to business
reputation, among other things" (GOLF WORLD BUSINESS,
8/17)....USA TODAY's Chris Jenkins reports that 37 companies
have each paid the PGA of America $165,000 for a corporate
hospitality tent at the PGA Championship in KY this week.
Univ. of MA sports marketing professor Jay Gladden said
"other than a title sponsorship," corporate hospitality is
"really the secondary revenue source that's funding [golf]
tournaments today" (USA TODAY, 8/18)....Gaylord Sports
Management inked a rep deal with Beth Bauer, who officially
turned pro last week, foregoing her last two years at Duke
Univ. Additionally, the firm "feels it has the inside
track" to Grace Park, the "biggest unpicked prize of all
among women golfers" (GOLF WORLD, 8/18 issue).
