FACILITY NOTES

In S.F., David Steele writes on Mayor Willie Brown's
idea to place an indoor sports arena next to Pac Bell Park:
"All anyone can rule out right now is the idea of a brand-
new state-of-the-art sports palace neighboring Pacific Bell
Park any time soon. If you think it will, then you're
probably reading this on your way to the mega-mall next to
the 49ers' new stadium. The one located near the
Fantasyland exit off Highway 101" (S.F. CHRONICLE,
8/11)....In Minneapolis, Tom Powers, on the Vikings' claim
that they need a new stadium, rather than renovating the
Metrodome: "I've been to the Vikings' offices and have seen
all the pie charts and color graphics. They've explained it
many times. But it's hard to grasp" (STAR TRIBUNE,
8/11)....In Tampa, Steve Newborn writes that the Indians
"fueled rumors" yesterday that the team "may be leaving" its
spring training facility at Chain O'Lakes Stadium in Winter
Haven, FL, after their lease expires in three years.
Newborn adds that team officials faxed a letter to the city
saying they are "evaluating their plans and did not want to
commit to another contract" (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 8/11).
