ESPN CLASSIC MAKES RUN AT BOXING FILM: PLANS TO ADD MORE

ESPN Classic has "joined the ranks of the cable
channels that buy the broadcast window of theatrical
movies," as it has purchased the rights to "Price of Glory,"
a film about a family of Latino boxers, according to John
Dempsey of DAILY VARIETY. The movie, which stars actor
Jimmy Smits, will air during the network's Sunday night
movie showcase "Reel Classics." ESPN Classic VP & GM Mark
Shapiro said that the network will "look for opportunistic
buys of new movies in the broadcast window," adding the
network's main goal is to get its hands on "the most popular
and entertaining sports-themed movies of the past." Shapiro
said that ESPN Classic is "alerting the major studios that
it wants to join the list of networks that buy short windows
to older A titles" (DAILY VARIETY, 7/20).
