ALL SPORTS IS LOCAL: N.Y. POST GOES WITH WEEKLY GOTHAM MAG

Beginning June 1, the N.Y. Post will publish a separate
weekly newspaper covering the area's sports teams, according
to Jim Rutenberg of the N.Y. TIMES. The new publication,
called N.Y. Post Sports Week, will cost $1.50 per week, and
Rutenberg wrote the "plan is in keeping with the strategy"
of News Corp. Chair Rupert Murdoch to "capitalize on avid
sports fans' passions for their favorite teams and players."
This will "not be a major rollout," as the initial "print
run will be 75,000 to 100,000, a fraction compared" to the
daily circulation of around 436,000 for the N.Y. Post. The
title will have 48 to 52 pages "at first" and be "supported
by newsstand sales, with some advertising." N.Y. Post
Publisher & Editor-in-Chief Ken Chandler said that the news
articles "would be original, not recycled." Six new
reporters "will write exclusively for the weekly newspaper,
but the entire sports staff will contribute to it in return
for more money." Chandler said Sports Week will include
"long features, investigations and deeper statistics," with
color on the cover (N.Y. TIMES, 5/22).
