GALAXY'S STADIUM HOPES GET INITIAL O.K. BY CA STATE BOARD

The MLS Galaxy "cleared a major hurdle in its quest"
for a new facility yesterday when the finance committee of
the CA State University (Carson) Board of Trustees
unanimously approved the "concept" of a 30,000-seat soccer-
specific stadium, according to Frank Girardot of the SAN
GABRIEL VALLEY-TRIBUNE. The full board is expected to
approve the plan this morning, and if that happens, Galaxy
President Tim Leiweke said the team could leave the Rose
Bowl and be playing in a new stadium by April 2002.
Leiweke: "(The vote) indicates there is interest in going
ahead with good faith negotiations." The $85M Carson plans
call for the soccer stadium, a 12,000-seat tennis stadium,
fields and facilities for the USSF's National Training
Academy and housing for "as many" as 240 people.
Yesterday's approval "was a necessary step in Leiweke's plan
to have the USSF move from Chicago to L.A. Leiweke said the
USSF has 12 relocation proposals, but "we understand we're
one of two favorites" (SAN GABRIEL VALLEY-TRIBUNE, 5/10).
